China recounts its mines: rhenium resources triple, gold jumps

China re-checked 1,800 mines and found more rare metals: rhenium resources tripled, and gold rose by the equivalent of 50 large deposits.

ماذا حدث

China's Ministry of Natural Resources said on 31 October that it had reassessed 17 strategic minerals at more than 1,800 mines. Rhenium resources rose more than threefold. The gold increase equals 50 large deposits, nickel 30. Gallium, indium, tantalum and vanadium each grew by more than 10 large deposits.

لماذا يهمك

These are not new finds. It is metal that was not counted before: low-grade ore, by-product elements and hard-to-mine areas. Rhenium goes into jet engine parts, zirconium into nuclear fuel rods. The more raw material China has at home, the less it needs imports.

Open the Xinhua report

What happened. On Saturday, 31 October, the Xinhua news agency reported the results of a big review of China's mineral resources, citing the Ministry of Natural Resources. In 2024 the ministry brought together more than 100 institutions and nearly 2,000 survey staff across 27 provinces, regions and cities. In a year they reassessed more than 1,800 operating mines and large and medium mining areas.

What was counted. 17 minerals China calls strategic: gallium, germanium, indium, chromite, nickel, cobalt, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, vanadium, rare earths, rhenium, potash, gold, manganese and helium. The review looked at what used to be left out: by-product elements in other ores, low-grade ore and deposits that are hard to work. It was done for today's technology and economics.

The result. Resources rose clearly for 13 of the 17. Rhenium more than tripled. Gold rose by as much as 50 large deposits would add, nickel by 30. Gallium, indium, tantalum and vanadium each rose by more than 10 large deposits. The report gives no figures in tonnes.

Separate finds. In Baicheng, Xinjiang, China found its first zircon placer deposit in ancient river and lake sediments. The ministry says it could sharply raise domestic zircon supply; China now relies heavily on imports. The ministry also named a breakthrough at the Chating copper-gold project in Anhui and a super-large hidden lead-zinc deposit in Guizhou.

Why it matters to you. Rhenium is used in heat-resistant alloys for jet engines. Zirconium goes into fuel rod cladding in nuclear reactors and into aerospace alloys. More raw material at home means China depends less on suppliers. The effect on world prices is unclear for now: this is a recount of resources in the ground, not higher output. That is our reading.

What we don't know. How much this is in tonnes. How much of it pays to mine, and when. Whether it changes China's exports. We have not seen the ministry's full report, only Xinhua's article.
