ماذا حدث
On Monday, 26 October, Indonesia's rupiah stayed near 18,000 per US dollar. At the open it weakened 9 points, or 0.05%, to Rp18,089, ANTARA reports. CNBC Indonesia (Refinitiv, 09:41 Jakarta time) had the rupiah down 0.30% at 18,095 while the won rose 0.18%.
لماذا يهمك
This is the rate Indonesia pays for imports and dollar debts. It is a net oil importer, so costly oil and a strong dollar weigh on the rupiah, Al Jazeera wrote in June.

The Fed, ECB and Bank of Japan decisions. CNBC Indonesia says rates are expected to hold, and the signals about the next move may matter more. More in our story: https://freekonomist.com/news/central-bank-week-fed-ecb-boj-2026-10-27/
What the market shows. The rupiah opened Monday at 18,089 per dollar against 18,080 at the previous close. That is 9 points, or 0.05%, weaker, per ANTARA. CNBC Indonesia at 09:41 Jakarta time had a different figure: down 0.30% at 18,095. The numbers likely differ because the time and the data source differ. Simple math: at 18,089, one hundred dollars is about 1.81 million rupiah.
Who is rising nearby. The US dollar weakened on Monday, and six of ten currencies in the region were up. The South Korean won led with a 0.18% gain to 1,321.21 per dollar. The yen rose 0.13% to 156.65. The ringgit, the yuan and the Singapore dollar gained only 0.02% each, so "surge" is too strong for them. Only the Philippine peso did worse than the rupiah, down 0.33%.
Why the dollar is softer. The dollar index (DXY) fell 0.19% to 101.617. CNBC gives the reasons: lower US government bond yields (the 10-year near 4.974%) and lower oil after reports of a Qatari mediator in Tehran. Ray Attrill of National Australia Bank, as quoted by CNBC from Reuters, said the US bond market is the main driver of the dollar for now. The rupiah has its own weak spots: in June Al Jazeera cited strong dollar demand from costly oil and a narrower Indonesian trade surplus.
What came before. On 29 September Reuters reported that the rupiah weakened past 18,000 per dollar (to 18,010) for the first time in nearly two months, as yields and oil prices rose. On 4 June Al Jazeera reported a record-weak rupiah at 18,028 per dollar. The pages we opened today do not say Monday was a new record, and we do not claim it.
What next. This week brings the Fed, ECB and Bank of Japan decisions. We already covered them here: https://freekonomist.com/news/central-bank-week-fed-ecb-boj-2026-10-27/.
