ماذا حدث
On Wednesday 28 October the US Fed announces its rate decision. Markets almost unanimously expect a pause: the rate stays at 3.75% to 4% after September's hike. We do not know the outcome and will not guess it.
لماذا يهمك
US inflation hit 3.7% a year in September, mostly because of costly energy. The Fed's rate shapes mortgages, loans and the dollar, so it touches asset prices around the world.
ماذا تتحقق منه وتراقبه
Watch the statement text and Kevin Warsh's press conference at 2:30 pm New York time (18:30 UTC), and whether he points to more hikes. For markets the tone may matter more than the decision itself.
What is happening. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets on 27 and 28 October. The decision comes on Wednesday. In September the committee voted 12 to 0 to raise the rate by 1/4 point, to 3.75% to 4%. CNN calls it the first hike in three years. Markets now mostly expect a pause. By CME FedWatch figures that CNBC cites, futures show about a 10% chance of a hike this week and better than 80% for December.
Why the Fed hikes at all. The Fed's goal is 2% inflation a year. In September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, largely because of energy. Core inflation, without fuel and food, was 2.6%, up 0.3 percentage point from August. CNN links soaring gas prices to the war with Iran and says price increases are spreading beyond the gas station.
What complicates it. US mortgage rates are above 7%, and CNBC says the housing market is in a deep freeze. The job market is calm: few layoffs, but jobless people struggle to find work. So, as CNBC puts it, a pause gives time to see how September's hike worked. A signal of tighter policy could hurt housing and jobs.
What to watch today. In September the statement came at 2:00 pm New York time. Warsh's press conference today is at 2:30 pm (18:30 UTC). Warsh dislikes forward guidance, which means telling markets in advance where rates are going. A Deutsche Bank economist expects him to still hint that more tightening will likely be needed. Evercore ISI's Krishna Guha says the approach carries "material execution risk" and describes the baseline as one hike a quarter. CNBC adds that Vice Chair Jefferson and New York Fed President Williams point to hikes at every other meeting.
Other views. Citigroup expects a hike in December, but allows that the Fed could start cutting next year. Mohamed El-Erian of Allianz says more hikes would be a mistake and would hit housing and consumer loans.
Politics. The US midterm elections are on 3 November, six days away. President Donald Trump demands lower rates, and CNN says Warsh will likely get questions about political pressure. Bank of America's Aditya Bhave notes that because markets expect a hold, a surprise hike could cause a burst of volatility.
Why it matters worldwide. This is our reading, not a fact from the sources. The Fed's rate helps set the price of the dollar, and investors in stocks, gold and bitcoin watch it. Markets often react less to the 0.25 point itself than to the tone: if the Fed sounds tougher than expected, assets can jump around. Nobody knows how today will go. This is not a forecast and not advice to buy or sell anything.
