ماذا حدث

On 20 October Malaysia's central bank (BNM) launched SSDS+. It is a platform to issue, record and hold tokenised bonds and sukuk, which are Islamic bonds. It runs on distributed ledger technology, the tech behind blockchains. Payments go through the RENTAS+ system in central bank money, around the clock.

لماذا يهمك

Tokenising real-world assets (RWA) is one of the biggest themes in crypto. Here a central bank is doing it, not a startup. The platform is also ready for retail bonds, so tokens like these could one day reach everyday investors.

ماذا تتحقق منه وتراقبه

Watch for the first issue on SSDS+ and when retail bonds arrive. So far the central bank has not named a single issue or any volumes.

Bank Negara Malaysia release

What launched. SSDS+ is the next generation of SSDS, Malaysia's central securities depository for the wholesale market. A depository keeps the record of who owns which security. The new version keeps those records as tokens. BNM built it in-house on cloud and distributed ledger technology.

How payment works. SSDS+ is linked to RENTAS+, the central bank's payment system. SSDS+ handles token transfers and ownership records, and RENTAS+ moves the money for the bond purchase. Settlement is in central bank money and runs around the clock, not just in office hours.

Who it is for. It starts with the wholesale market: banks and large investors. But BNM says the platform is already ready to issue tokenised government and corporate bonds for retail investors.

Context. Per Cointelegraph, BNM set out a three-year asset tokenisation roadmap in November 2025. In February the central bank tested ringgit stablecoins and tokenised deposits with major banks. Still, the launch announcement names no tokens already issued and no trading volumes.
