ماذا حدث
Petrol 95 in South Africa rose R3.33 a litre on 7 October, and R10.15 since March. The next change takes effect on Wednesday, 4 November. We did not find the official announcement on gov.za on 2 November. Early data points to a small cut, because the fuel tax is temporarily lowered for a month.
لماذا يهمك
Discovery Insure says its clients spend up to R950 more a month on petrol than a year ago, and fill up less at a time. Dearer fuel can also push up the cost of moving goods.
ماذا تتحقق منه وتراقبه
Look for the statement from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) on gov.za. Until it is out, any November number is a forecast, not a price. Also watch 2 December, when the tax relief gets smaller.

What is known. In its official statement, the DMPR says that from 7 October petrol 95 rose by 333 cents a litre (R3.33) and 0.005% diesel by 324.38 cents. It points to the average Brent crude price rising from 87.89 to 101 US dollars, US/Iran tensions and uncertainty over oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. South Africa adjusts fuel prices every month.
What it adds up to over a year. BusinessTech, citing Discovery Insure, reports that average monthly petrol spending among its clients rose from about R1,750 in 2025 to as much as R2,700 in 2026. That is up to 54%, or up to R950. By BusinessTech's table, petrol 95 rose R10.15 a litre from March to October and 0.005% diesel R14.84. Moonstone gives the inland price of petrol 95: R20.75 a litre in January 2026 and R30.25 in October. For a 50-litre tank that is R475 more.
How habits changed. This is data from Discovery Insure clients only (more than 200,000 of them), not all motorists. The average fill fell from 36 to 31 litres. Purchases under 20 litres were 36% of transactions in 2026, up from 25% in 2025. Before the October rise, purchasing volumes jumped 300% before midnight on 6 October, and diesel 400%. A typical hike brings about 200%. Daily commuting barely changed, while long-distance trips in winter fell 30%.
What comes next. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a temporary cut to the General Fuel Levy: R1.50 a litre on petrol and R3.00 on diesel from 4 November to 1 December. From 2 December to 5 January 2027 the cut is R1.00 and R1.50. IOL reports that month-end Central Energy Fund (CEF) data points to a cut of about 50 cents for petrol 95 and R1.58 and R1.68 for diesel. BusinessTech expects a small cut. Without the relief, IOL says, petrol would have risen by up to R1.16 and diesel by up to R1.42.
The final numbers are not known yet. The DMPR will announce them. IOL notes that other factors, such as the Slate Levy, could also change the result. These are forecasts, not prices.
Why it matters beyond drivers. Economist Sfiso Skenjana of ESG Analytics says diesel moves goods, so fuel costs reach the price of everyday products. Moonstone reports that producer prices rose 6.2% in September, after 5% in August, partly because of fuel. Transport costs rose 10.8% in a year, while overall inflation was 4.5%.
