What happened. SpaceX (SPCX), which trades on Nasdaq, fell more than 6% on Friday, October 30. CNBC shows a close of $134.72, down $9.17, or 6.37%, on volume of about 114.5 million shares. Yahoo Finance calls it the lowest close since August 20.
How big the slide is. Yahoo Finance says the company was worth more than $2.3 trillion at its October 6 high and is worth about $1.8 trillion now. That is a loss of more than $500 billion in under a month, roughly 22% from the October 6 level. CNBC lists a market value of $1.83 trillion.
What came before. The stock rose about 8% on October 21 after third quarter results beat Wall Street's forecasts, and it has since lost more than $300 billion in value, Yahoo Finance writes. On October 22, about 1.3 billion shares became free to sell after a lockup ended, and the stock held above $140 in the sessions that followed. On Friday it broke below that level. Back in July, Reuters quoted an expert saying that investors, venture capitalists and employees often sell when lockups expire.
Next to the IPO price. According to Reuters, SpaceX went public on June 12 at an IPO price of $135 and opened at $150. It first slid below $135 on July 15. Friday's close of $134.72 is 28 cents under the IPO price. The stock is now about 10% below its first-day open, Yahoo Finance says.
Other space stocks. Space stocks as a group have lost about half their value since SpaceX's June debut, according to Yahoo Finance. After the lockup, Rocket Lab and AST SpaceMobile bounced 10% to 17% while SpaceX went nowhere. On Friday every stock in the group fell, by about 4% to 11%.
What was in the news. Yahoo Finance ties the sell-off to scrutiny of Starlink in Washington over service slowdowns in Ukraine, and to a tech stock rout that hit Alphabet, Amazon and Meta. No single cause for the SpaceX drop is named.
Who it touches. Anyone who follows recent IPOs and tech stocks. Reuters reported that retail investors received about 20% of the shares in the offering. The next notable event for the company, per Yahoo Finance, is Starship Flight 15, expected next month.
