Qué pasó
Exactly 18 years ago, on 31 October 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto shared "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" on a cryptography mailing list. It is nine pages long. It describes digital money you can send directly, without a bank.
Por qué te importa
The whole crypto market grew from this paper. The white paper format became a must for new coins. But a white paper guarantees nothing: it states intentions, not results.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Before you buy any coin, open its white paper. Check what real problem it solves, who the team is, how many tokens go to the team and investors, and when they unlock.

What happened 18 years ago. On 31 October 2008 a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto wrote to a cryptography mailing list: "I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party." The email linked to a file called bitcoin.pdf. Who Satoshi is remains unknown.
What the paper says. The white paper is nine pages long. Its core problem is double spending: how to stop someone spending the same digital money twice without a bank checking every payment. Satoshi's answer: a network of computers timestamps payments and links them into a chain secured by proof-of-work. Rewriting that history means redoing all the work. As long as honest participants control most of the computing power, the network stays safe.
Where new coins come from. In the email Satoshi says new coins are made from Hashcash-style proof-of-work, and the same work protects the network from double spending. People who support the network earn new coins and transaction fees. Hashcash was described by British cryptographer Adam Back, and his 2002 paper is among the white paper's references, Bits.media notes.
Why it matters to you. Thousands of projects copied the white paper format. Some write honest technical documents, others write sales brochures. Bits.media points out that a white paper does not guarantee anything will be built, and outright scam projects can have polished papers too.
How to read a white paper. One: what real problem does it solve, and is it better than what exists. Two: are there technical details or just buzzwords. Three: tokenomics, meaning how many tokens go to the team and investors and when they unlock. Four: the roadmap, and whether deadlines are met. Five: who the team is and whether you can check their track record. Six: whether risks are named honestly.
What we don't know. Who Satoshi Nakamoto is. How many of the thousands of white papers since 2008 described something that actually worked: the sources give no count.
