Por qué te importa

If CAT is in your portfolio or an index fund, this is your report. It shows demand for equipment tied to AI data centers is holding up: the power and energy segment is now the largest by sales. But a good report does not guarantee a rising share price, as this reaction shows.

What happened. Caterpillar published its third-quarter 2026 results on 29 October. Sales and revenues were $20.7 billion, up 17% from $17.6 billion a year earlier. Higher sales volume (up $2.2 billion) and better prices (up $663 million) drove the rise. Profit per share was $7.13, against $4.88 a year ago. Adjusted profit, which leaves out restructuring costs, was $7.20 against $4.95.

Margin and cash. Operating profit margin rose to 20.4% from 17.3%. Adjusted margin was 20.6% against 17.5%. Enterprise operating cash flow was $4.4 billion, and the company ended the quarter with $7.9 billion of cash. It spent $1.2 billion on buying back its shares and $0.7 billion on dividends.

What the company and the press say. Chairman and CEO Joe Creed pointed to the durability of its end markets, with strong order rates and a record backlog. According to Bloomberg, the power and energy segment, which builds generators, large engines and gas turbines, is now the largest business by sales, ahead of the excavators and bulldozers Caterpillar is best known for. Demand is driven by the huge electricity needs of AI data centers.

Why the shares fell. Bloomberg reports shares dropped more than 4% in premarket trading in New York right after the statement. It notes a wider pullback in AI-linked stocks: investors are warier of how much tech companies spend on data centers, and rising interest rates add to financing worries. Bloomberg does not name a cause for this particular drop, and neither do we.

What we don't know. Where the shares will close the day. How revenue compares with analyst forecasts: our sources compare only profit. What outlook the company gives for coming periods. This is an overview, not advice to buy or sell.
