Qué pasó

On 27 October Discord said that from 16 November every Discoverable server (1,000+ members, no invite needed) will get a public web page with summaries of channel discussions. From mid-December those pages and search engines may show the messages themselves from public channels, without usernames or avatars.

Por qué te importa

If you post in a big public server, say about a game or crypto, anyone may find your words through Google. Private servers, DMs and group DMs are not affected. In the US and many other countries the setting is on by default.

Qué revisar y vigilar

To hide your messages: User Settings, then Data and Privacy. One switch covers all such servers. Admins pick channels in Server Settings, Web Presence. Messages sent before mid-December will not appear.

What happened. On 27 October Discord said on its blog that it will make conversations on its most public servers easier to find in web search. This only covers Discoverable servers: servers in Discord's directory with at least 1,000 members, at least eight weeks old, that anyone can join without an invite. Discord says there are more than 63,000 of them.

What changes and when. From 16 November every such server gets a web page. If admins have not set one up, Discord publishes a default page. It may show automatic summaries of discussions in public channels. From mid-December those pages and search results may show the messages themselves, word for word. Usernames and avatars are not shown. The rollout is gradual, so the first messages may take a few weeks to appear.

What you can do. Members can stop their messages from being shown in User Settings, Data and Privacy. One setting covers every Discoverable server. Channel summaries are made separately and only server admins can turn them off. Admins control channels in Server Settings, Web Presence. If nothing changes, public channels stay on. Channels that may appear on the web will be labeled.

Where it differs. In the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, showing members' messages is off by default because of local rules, so people there must opt in. Teen users are excluded entirely. Everywhere else the setting is on until you turn it off.

Keep in mind. If you turn the setting off later, messages you sent while it was on stay up unless you delete them. Discord says useful answers are locked inside chats and hard to find. Engadget compares it to the way Reddit threads show up in search results today.
