Germany's gas storage is 61% full, short of the 70% it was meant to hit

Qué pasó

Data from the European AGSI platform show German gas storage about 61.2% full on November 1. The law asks for an average of 70% by that date. The economy ministry and the Federal Network Agency say there is enough gas for winter. The law sets no penalty for missing the target.

Por qué te importa

Germany is Europe's biggest gas user. A smaller stock before winter means less cushion if it turns cold or supplies are disrupted. The head of the network agency said plainly that gas has become much more expensive. That feeds into bills and into European gas prices.

Qué revisar y vigilar

Watch how fast gas leaves storage in cold weeks and how much LNG arrives. The EU average is around 75% right now, well above Germany. This is an overview, not advice.

The numbers. AGSI, the platform run by Gas Infrastructure Europe, shows 151.3 TWh of gas in German storage on gas day October 30. That is 61.17% of working volume. Withdrawals already beat injections: on that day 427.5 GWh more left storage than went in. Tagesschau and DW, citing AGSI, put the level on November 1 at 61.2%. The EU average on the same days was about 74.7%.

Where 70% comes from. German rules ask for at least 80% full, but six storage sites have a lower target of 45%. On average that works out to 70% by November 1. Germany missed it by almost nine points.

What officials say. An economy ministry spokeswoman said gas supply for the winter is secure even at current levels. What matters is not only stock, but actual withdrawals, ongoing imports and other measures. The Federal Network Agency rates the risk of a tight supply as low. Its head, Klaus Müller, said hitting the storage targets is no longer essential for secure supply, because Germany now has LNG terminals. But gas has become much more expensive, and every customer should be aware of that.

What the industry says. Timm Kehler of the gas and water industry association noted that the law has no sanctions for a miss. He said storage holds about 150 TWh, clearly more than was withdrawn last winter. The storage association INES called the miss a serious warning sign: Germany starts the heating season with smaller reserves, and the risk grows in a hard frost or if imports are disrupted.

What the state can do. Under the energy law, booked but unused storage capacity can be taken away if needed. The network agency says that is not necessary right now.

Who it touches. People paying gas and power bills in Germany and Europe, and anyone who watches TTF gas prices and energy stocks.

Implicaciones

  • ConfirmadoStorage users face no direct penalty for the miss: the law has no sanctions.
  • Nuestra lecturaA cold winter would push Germany to lean more on LNG imports, which could keep European gas prices firm. This is our inference.
