Por qué te importa
It is the first month of a fuel tax cut that runs until year end. Energy was 12.2% pricier on the year, down from 14.9% in September. Core inflation, without food and energy, fell to 2.1%. Germany is the euro area's biggest economy, so its prices weigh on ECB decisions.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Euro area inflation for October and the final Destatis data on 11 November. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On 30 October Destatis published its flash estimate for October 2026. Consumer prices rose 2.8% from October last year. In September the rate was 3.3%. Compared with September, prices fell 0.2%.
Expectations. Per Reuters, analysts expected 3.1% on the harmonised index of consumer prices, the measure used for comparisons across the EU. It also came in at 2.8%. So inflation slowed more than expected.
Why it slowed. Per Reuters, Germany cut its fuel tax at the start of October, until the end of the year. Pump prices dipped a little. Energy is still 12.2% pricier on the year, but in September it was 14.9%.
What's inside. Core inflation, without food and energy, was 2.1% after 2.4%. Services rose 2.5% on the year, goods 3.0%. Food barely moved: up 0.4%.
The economy is growing too. On the same day Destatis said German GDP grew 0.2% in Q3 from the previous quarter and 1.3% on the year.
Why it matters to you. The ECB held rates on Thursday but, per Reuters, hinted at a hike in December. Softer prices in Germany may ease the pressure on the ECB a little. That is our reading, not a forecast. Part of the slowdown is a temporary tax effect, not demand.
What we don't know. How much the figure changes in the final data. What happens to prices when the tax relief ends. What inflation for the whole euro area will be.
