Qué pasó

Germany's statistics office Destatis said producer prices rose 6.7% in a year and 1.9% in a month in September. These are the prices factories and energy firms charge for goods sold at home. It was the biggest rise since March 2023. August was 4.6%.

Por qué te importa

Producer prices often reach the shops later. Germany is the largest economy in the euro area, so a jump like this puts pressure on European inflation. That shapes what the ECB does with rates, and so the euro and the cost of loans.

Qué revisar y vigilar

Without energy, prices rose only 3.2% in a year and 0.1% in a month. Watch the oil price and the next euro area inflation data.

Destatis release

Destatis published the data on 20 October. The producer price index for industrial products was 6.7% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier. That is the strongest yearly rise since March 2023, when it was 7.5%. Prices added 1.9% in the month. Trading Economics says markets expected a 0.8% monthly rise.

Energy did almost all of it. It rose 14.9% in a year and 5.8% in a month. Oil products cost 51.3% more than in September 2025: heating oil up 91.8%, motor fuels up 48.6%, naphtha up 53.8%. Destatis links this to the conflict in Iran and the Middle East. Gas rose 15% and electricity 8.2%.

Inputs for production, called intermediate goods, rose 6.4%. Metals led: up 14%, with copper and copper products up 31.4%. Capital goods such as machinery rose 2.4%, durable consumer goods 2.2%.

There is another side. Everyday consumer goods got 1.8% cheaper, food overall 4.1%. Butter is 34.8% cheaper than a year ago, pork 13.9%.

This is not shop inflation. But if expensive energy lasts, part of the rise usually reaches consumers within a few months.
