On 22 October Norway's fund reported a -0.5% return for the third quarter. The loss was 278 billion kroner, about $29.7bn according to Reuters. Bonds lost 3.5% and stocks gained 0.5%. The fund was worth 22,014 billion kroner on 30 September.
Por qué te importa
The fund owns on average 1.5% of every listed company in the world, so its result is a good read on how a normal portfolio did this quarter. The main lesson: when rates rise, bonds stop being a safe harbour.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Where rates go next, since bonds depend on them. The krone, which cut the fund's value this quarter. And sectors: energy rose while utilities and real estate fell.
Where the minus came from. Deputy CEO Trond Grande said rising interest rates hurt the fixed-income results, while stocks ended close to zero. The gap between sectors was large: energy companies rose the most, while rate-sensitive sectors such as utilities and real estate fell.
By asset class. Stocks +0.5%, bonds -3.5%, unlisted real estate +0.4%, unlisted renewable energy +7.5%. The fund trailed its benchmark index by 0.18 percentage points. On 30 September 72.1% was in stocks, 25.8% in bonds, 1.6% in real estate and 0.5% in renewables.
Why the value fell more. The fund lost 670 billion kroner of value in the quarter. Of that, 278 billion was the investment loss, and another 472 billion came from a stronger krone: foreign assets are worth less when counted in kroner. The state added 80 billion kroner to the fund.
What the fund is. It invests Norway's oil and gas revenue. According to Reuters it is worth about $2.3 trillion and is invested in some 7,100 companies, plus bonds, property and renewable energy projects.
