What happened. Samsung Electronics published full results for the third quarter, which ended on 30 September 2026, on 29 October. Revenue was 195.3 trillion won, a record for the company and up 14% from the second quarter. Operating profit was 107.4 trillion won. Samsung calls itself the world's first tech company with quarterly operating profit above 100 trillion won. It gave this number in advance, on 8 October. Reuters wrote then that it was slightly above the LSEG SmartEstimate of 106.1 trillion won and that it was the fourth record quarter in a row.

Where the money came from. The Device Solutions (chips) division earned an operating profit of 106.5 trillion won on revenue of 147.1 trillion won. The memory business set records for both revenue and profit. Prices rose across all memory applications because of demand from servers. The company sharply increased sales of HBM4, the fast memory used with AI accelerators. The foundry (contract chipmaking) business also improved.

Where it is weaker. The Device eXperience division, which covers phones, TVs and home appliances, posted an operating loss of 0.8 trillion won. Mobile and networks together had revenue of 37.7 trillion won and a loss of 0.6 trillion won: earnings rose from the previous quarter but fell from a year earlier because of cost pressure. TVs and home appliances together had revenue of 13.9 trillion won and a loss of 0.2 trillion won.

What comes next. Samsung expects demand for AI memory to stay strong. For 2027 it expects AI-driven demand to far exceed industry supply compared with 2026. Per Reuters, Samsung and Micron expect the imbalance between supply and demand to last into 2028. Reuters notes risks: competition from China and a possible slowdown in AI spending. Analysts cited by Reuters expect fourth-quarter profit to grow 8.2% from the third quarter. Growth in the third quarter was about 20%. TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10% to 15% in the fourth quarter, much slower than in the second.

Shareholder returns and spending. The third-quarter dividend is 4,601 won per share, 30 trillion won in total. Of the expected 90 to 110 trillion won in shareholder returns for 2026, 35 trillion won is already planned or paid. The final decision comes at a board meeting in late January 2027. Capital spending in the quarter was 29 trillion won, and about 84.4 trillion won is expected for all of 2026.
