Taiwan's Taiex index fell 2.5% on October 30 and closed at 45,211.83. The cause is a global selloff in AI shares, not Taiwan itself.

Qué pasó

Taiwan's main index, the Taiex, fell 2.49% on Friday, October 30, and closed at 45,211.83. Bloomberg says it was down as much as 3.5% during the day, trading more than 10% below its October 6 record, but narrowly avoided a technical correction at the close.

Por qué te importa

Taiwan is one of the most AI-exposed stock markets. TSMC alone is more than 40% of its value. When AI shares fall worldwide, Taiwan feels it fast.

What happened. On Friday, October 30, Taiwan's main index, the Taiex, fell 2.49% (1,156.50 points) to close at 45,211.83. Investing.com reported the fall as 2.53% and a new one-month low. The gap is in the hundredths and comes from how it is counted. The story is the same. Searches jumped on Monday, November 2, as people reacted to Friday's session, not to a new fall.

How close is a correction. A correction means a fall of 10% or more from a record high. Bloomberg says the index was down as much as 3.5% on Friday and traded more than 10% below its October 6 record. It recovered some of that by the close and narrowly avoided a correction on that measure. We do not have an exact distance from the record at the close, so we do not give one.

Why. The cause is not Taiwan itself but a global selloff in AI-linked shares. Bloomberg lists three worries: higher borrowing costs, massive AI spending and some weaker-than-expected earnings. On Friday the Nasdaq fell 2.86%, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index 7.20% and TSMC's US-listed shares 5.95%. TSMC is more than 40% of Taiwan's total market value, so moves like this reach the Taiex fast. At the close TSMC shares lost 2.0%, MediaTek 4.2% and Delta Electronics 9.8%.

What analysts say. Vey-Sern Ling of Union Bancaire Privee says the Taiwan selloff has mostly been driven by sentiment tied to global moves in AI stocks. Tony Huang of Taishin Securities Investment Advisory noted that AI development has not slowed, as Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft have kept their big spending plans. These are their views, not facts.

What next and what is not known. The index broke below support near 45,300 points, where its 120-day moving average sits. It lost 4.7% in October, and foreign investors were net sellers of Taiwanese shares worth NT$994.3 billion (US$30.61 billion). On Monday morning, per Trading Economics, the Taiex was down about 0.5% (44,991 points). We do not know Monday's close at the time of writing. This is an overview, not advice.
