Qué pasó
On 27 October Tanzania's energy minister Juma Homera announced an estimated 223 billion cubic feet of gas (6.3 billion cubic metres) at Mnazi Bay. It was found by the Kasa-1X ST2 well of state firm TPDC and France's Maurel & Prom.
Por qué te importa
It is the country's first gas find in more than a decade. The gas will stay at home: for power plants, industry and vehicles. For Maurel & Prom it means more output, and for East Africa another local energy source.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Watch whether output starts in November as Maurel & Prom says, and whether the well reaches the expected 50 million cubic feet a day. Also watch whether TPDC signs small LNG deals with investors.
What happened. Tanzania's energy minister Juma Homera said about 223 billion cubic feet of gas was found in the Mnazi Bay area in the south. Reuters says the Kasa-1X ST2 well made the find. It was drilled by state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and France's Maurel & Prom. BBC reports the minister called it a "major milestone".
How big. 223 billion cubic feet is about 6.3 billion cubic metres. Before this, Tanzania's discovered reserves stood at about 57.5 trillion cubic feet, according to the energy regulator. So the find is small for the country, but it sits next to working infrastructure. On 22 October Maurel & Prom put the find at about 200 billion cubic feet, with 120 billion net to its 60% stake.
When the gas comes. Maurel & Prom says output could start as early as November 2026, with potential of about 50 million cubic feet a day. With two new wells, MB-5 and MS-2, Mnazi Bay's potential rises to nearly 200 million cubic feet a day, up from about 130 million now.
What it is for. BBC says the gas will go to the home market: power generation, industry and vehicles. Homera also said TPDC is in talks with four investors planning small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.
A bit of history. Tanzania first found gas on Songo Songo Island in 1974, found Mnazi Bay in 1982, and started commercial output in 2004. Its largest single find, 2.7 trillion cubic feet, came in 2016.
Our take. This will not move world gas prices: the volume is small. But it is real news for Tanzania's energy supply and for Maurel & Prom shares. This is not advice to buy or sell anything.
