Qué pasó
On 15 October Tesla unveiled its new Roadster at a SpaceX test site in Texas. The prototype jumped over five cars and landed softly on cold-gas thrusters. The 0-60 mph run took 0.81 seconds on Tesla's timer. Musk said production would start in 2028, and no price was announced. From 24 to 27 October the car is on display at the Petersen museum in Los Angeles.
Por qué te importa
CNBC says the Roadster is unlikely to matter much for Tesla's finances: it is a costly, low-volume car. But the show fed talk of a Tesla and SpaceX merger. There is no price, no confirmed date and no road approval for the flying features yet.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Watch whether Tesla names a price and keeps 2028, whether the Rocket version gets road approval, and whether Tesla and SpaceX confirm a merger. Not advice to buy or sell shares.
The show took place on Thursday 15 October at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, near Waco. The livestream started at 8:55 p.m. Eastern Time. On stage were Elon Musk and design chief Franz von Holzhausen. Musk promised "some crazy stuff" and the result of the world's best car company working with the world's best rocket company.
What did the audience see? A white two-seat prototype drove up a curved ramp, launched off it, jumped over five other Tesla cars and landed softly on cold-gas thrusters, NBC News reports. According to Tesla, in another run the car jumped 27 feet with a barrel roll. It then did 0-60 mph in 0.81 seconds. That is more than a second faster than Tesla's best time with the now-discontinued Model S Plaid.
What is confirmed? Tesla describes three versions. Performance: road-ready, with a suction system that presses the car to the surface, no thrusters, by reservation. Thrust: track-ready, with rear cold-gas thrusters. Rocket: invite only, one seat, thrusters around the perimeter, able to fly. Tesla says the Rocket is not approved for public roads. Musk acknowledged the car may not be legal everywhere, and said on stage that it is "not necessarily a safety-optimized car".
What is not confirmed? No price was announced. Specifications for the other versions were not disclosed. Musk said production would start in 2028, but that is his word, not a delivery commitment with a date. The deposit is $50,000 for the base version and $250,000 for Thrust. Tesla has taken deposits since 2017 and, per CNBC, has missed every delivery date it set. Musk also says the range will be 300 miles, less than half of what he first promised.
Why does it matter for shares? CNBC does not expect the Roadster to have a material financial impact. But the show strengthened merger talk: SpaceX went public in June, and at the time of the article it was valued at about $2 trillion and Tesla at $1.4 trillion. We found no confirmation of a merger. We covered Tesla's quarterly results separately.
What next? On 23 October Tesla posted a 34-second video of the interface, "inspired by fighter jet cockpits". It includes a track mode and a gauge reading "Thruster · 5,500 PSI". From 24 to 27 October you can see the car in the main lobby of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. This is not a price forecast and not advice to buy or sell.
