ماذا حدث
November 3 is Election Day in the US, and the midterms are today. CNBC found that since 1980 the S&P 500, the index of 500 large US companies, was on average up 13.7% one year after midterms. It was higher a year later after all 11 midterms from 1982 to 2022.

Right after a vote markets are usually calm: CNBC's average for the S&P 500 is +0.2% after one day and one week. This time investors are also weighing AI spending, the debt ceiling and the budget deficit, according to Reuters. History is a guide, not a forecast.
ماذا تتحقق منه وتراقبه
Watch who controls the House and the Senate, and whether power is split. Reuters says a divided Congress raises the risk of government shutdowns and debt-limit fights. This is an overview, not advice.

What history shows. CNBC looked at the S&P 500 after US elections since 1980. For presidential and midterm elections combined, the average move was +0.2% after one day, +0.2% after one week and +1.1% after one month. One year after midterms the average was +13.7%, and after presidential elections +13.8%. The index was higher a year later after all 11 midterms from 1982 to 2022.
Divided government. CNBC counts 15 cases of divided government (10 midterms and 5 presidential elections). The average one-year gain was 15%, and it was positive in 14 of the 15 cases. Under single-party control the average one-year gain was 11.5%. The sample is small, so treat this with care. That caution is ours.
Not a rule. In 2018 the S&P 500 ended the year down 6.2%, while the Fed raised rates four times. A year after that election it was up 11.7%. Ned Davis Research, quoted by Reuters, studied eight midterm cycles since 1930 in which the president's party lost the House. The S&P 500 rose for the rest of the year five times out of eight. The median gain from Election Day to year-end was 1.4%, against 1.9% across all midterm years.
What investors are gaming out. According to Reuters, a divided Congress raises the risk of government shutdowns and debt-limit fights. Investors are already worried about large deficits and rising interest costs. If Democrats win both chambers, investors expect tougher oversight of AI. If Republicans keep control of Congress, JPMorgan strategists say it would likely give the most supportive federal backdrop for the AI buildout. Analysts also say tax changes or higher defence spending could widen the deficit. Ebury analyst Diego Barnuevo expects the debt ceiling to come to the fore in 2027.
The backdrop. Reuters reports that since the current president returned to the White House in 2025, the S&P 500 has gained about 27%, helped by vast AI spending and strong earnings. Treasury yields are also substantially higher. Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid noted in a note that seasonality is not destiny.
