ماذا حدث

On 28 October Jio Platforms, the digital and telecom arm of Reliance Industries, began trading on the NSE and BSE at ₹1,358 a share. The issue price was ₹1,119, so the debut came 21.36% higher. The IPO, its first sale of shares to the public, was worth ₹30,213 crore, about ₹302 billion, and drew bids for 22.19 times the shares on offer.

لماذا يهمك

At that price Jio is valued at about ₹12.5 trillion. That makes it India's second most valuable listed company, behind its parent Reliance. It had 533.3 million subscribers in June 2026. Reliance shares fell about 2% the same morning, and the Nifty 50 index was also lower.

ماذا تتحقق منه وتراقبه

Watch whether Jio holds its listing price in the coming days, and Reliance's results: its board meets on 30 October. This is not advice to buy or sell.

What happened. On Wednesday 28 October 2026 Jio Platforms began trading on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the BSE, under the ticker JPL. Shares opened at ₹1,358 on both, against an issue price of ₹1,119. That is 21.36% above what IPO investors paid. At 10:54 am Indian time the NSE price was still flat at ₹1,358, Upstox reports.

How big the issue was. It was all new shares: 27 crore of them, worth ₹30,213 crore in total. A crore is 10 million, so that is about ₹302 billion. Bidding ran from 21 to 23 October, and the issue was fully taken up within 100 minutes of opening. By the close, NSE data show demand of 22.19 times the shares on offer: 70.55 times from institutions, 14.00 times from large non-institutional investors and 2.72 times from retail investors.

What the company is worth. At listing, Jio Platforms had a market value of about ₹12.5 trillion, Business Standard reports. Market value, or market cap, is the share price times the number of shares. That ranks Jio second among Indian companies, behind Reliance Industries (₹16.15 trillion) and ahead of Bharti Airtel (₹12.18 trillion). Indian outlets also write "lakh crore", which means a trillion: ₹12.5 lakh crore is the same figure.

Why it matters outside India. In the decade since Reliance entered mobile service, Jio has grown into one of the world's largest mobile operators by subscribers: 533.3 million in June 2026 and nearly 60% of India's data traffic, according to reported company figures. It also sells broadband, cloud and enterprise services. Business Standard reports it is the first public share offer in the world to pass one crore applications (10 million). Part of the proceeds will repay debt at its telecom subsidiary, the rest is for general corporate use.

What happened to Reliance shares. Reliance Industries keeps a majority stake in Jio. Its shares fell about 2% on Wednesday, Mint reports: they opened at ₹1,195.50 on the BSE, with a day range of ₹1,175 to ₹1,204 by the time of writing. The sources do not say why. The Nifty 50 index was also down 0.55% at 11:35 IST (NSE), so the move may not be only about Jio. Reliance's board meets on 30 October to approve quarterly results.

Keep in mind. A first-day premium shows what buyers paid on day one, not what the business is worth later. Prices can rise and fall. This follows our earlier story on the listing date. The sources give no dollar figures, so we do not convert. This is not advice to buy or sell.
