AI stock sell-off explained: how $2.5 trillion left the Nasdaq

AI stock sell-off explained: a political scare, borrowed money and automatic selling took about $2.5 trillion off the Nasdaq on Thursday, then AI shares bounced on Friday.

Qué pasó

On Thursday, November 5, about $2.5 trillion left the Nasdaq as investors feared tougher rules for data centers after the US elections. Borrowed money made the fall worse. On Friday AI shares bounced, and the S&P 500 ended the week down 2.7%.

Por qué te importa

Nvidia gave the S&P 500 its biggest lift on Friday. So AI shares move the whole market, not just one corner of it. The index is still only 5.7% below its record, so this was a shake-out, not a collapse.

Qué revisar y vigilar

Watch whether forced selling by funds that borrowed fades, as the expert quoted by CNN expects, and what state governments decide on data centers. Also watch the Fed meeting in December, where traders now see a bigger chance of a rate hike. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. On Thursday, November 5, the Nasdaq lost about $2.5 trillion in market value, CNN reports. According to elEconomista, the index fell 6.36%, its worst day since 2020. On Friday AI shares bounced and won back part of the losses. The S&P 500 rose 0.3% but ended the week down 2.7%. That is its worst week since April 2025, when Donald Trump shook markets with his Liberation Day tariffs.

Cause one: politics. US midterm results came in late on Tuesday night. Futures fell at first, then the market rose on Wednesday morning as investors cheered Democratic gains. By Thursday the mood had flipped. The market feared that winning Democrats would tighten rules for AI and slow data center building. One example is Texas, where Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa promised to pause new construction for a while and roll back some tax breaks. AP adds that voters across parties are wary of AI and dislike higher power bills caused by data centers.

The backdrop. Even before the vote the industry worried that costly borrowing would slow construction. Critics had long said AI shares had risen too far and formed a bubble.

What made the fall worse. According to CNN, funds that borrow to make bigger bets get calls from lenders to add cash when prices drop. If they cannot, they sell stocks, prices fall further, and the loop repeats. elEconomista cites analyst estimates. Retail investors sold first: Jefferies calls it the biggest wave of retail selling since March 2020. Then automatic mechanisms kicked in. Nomura puts the pressure from option hedging at $7 billion for every 1% drop. Volatility control funds sold almost $61 billion, leveraged ETFs added about $47 billion, and commodity trading advisors (CTAs) sold almost $13 billion of futures. The same source says the US stock market fell back by $3.7 trillion. That is a different measure from CNN's, so the totals do not match.

How the week ended. On Friday Tokyo and Seoul fell about 6%, and Germany's DAX lost 1.9%. In the US, Nvidia rose 2.8% after drops of 9.3% and 3.2%. Lam Research gained 8.2% after announcing a buyback of up to $25 billion. The Nasdaq rose 1.1% and the Dow Jones lost 0.5%. The S&P 500 is still 5.7% below last month's record.

What is still unclear. Power in Washington is split: Democrats hold Congress, Republican Trump holds the White House and the veto. AP says this may limit federal moves against AI. A strong jobs report helps the economy but could lift inflation: according to CME, the odds of a Fed rate hike in December rose. The 10-year US Treasury yield was 4.86% on Friday.

Implicaciones

  • ConfirmadoThe fall was deepened by borrowed money and automatic selling, not only by political news.
  • ConfirmadoA strong job market both helps the economy absorb slower data center building and raises the odds of a Fed rate hike.
  • Nuestra lecturaThe main political risk for data centers now sits at state level, not in federal rules. This is our view.
