Qué pasó

On 19 October BlackRock filed a prospectus with the SEC, the US market regulator, for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF, ticker PBIT. The fund will not hold bitcoin. It buys and sells options on BlackRock's own bitcoin ETF, IBIT. An option is a contract that gives the right to buy an asset at a set price.

Por qué te importa

It is a way to hold bitcoin with a cushion. Per the prospectus, each set of options starts with a maximum loss of about 10%. The price is a ceiling: above a certain level you do not get the gains.

Qué revisar y vigilar

The fee and the exchange are still blank in the prospectus. The filing asks to take effect 75 days after it was filed. The fund itself warns the protection is not fixed and losses can be bigger.

PBIT prospectus on SEC EDGAR

BlackRock filed the papers with the SEC on 19 October. It is a preliminary prospectus: it says plainly that the information is incomplete and may change, and that shares cannot be sold until the registration takes effect.

How it works. The fund holds three overlapping sets of options on IBIT or a similar bitcoin asset. Each month one set expires and a new one is added. The fund buys options that give the upside and sells others to help pay for them. The sold options set the ceiling. Part of the money sits in bonds, and their interest also helps pay for the protection.

About the protection. For each set, protection typically starts at about 90% of the asset's price when the options are bought. So the maximum loss per set is about 10% before fees. But the fund can move these levels, and the sets start at different times. So, as BlackRock writes, the fund has no fixed protection level, floor or cap. If bitcoin rises first and then falls, the loss from the new level can be more than 10%.

Context. Cointelegraph calls PBIT BlackRock's third bitcoin fund after IBIT and BITA, a fund that earns income by selling options. IBIT is the world's largest spot bitcoin ETF, with $65.7B in assets according to the outlet. Similar buffered funds already exist from Calamos, First Trust and Innovator. BlackRock still has no spot ETFs for Solana or XRP.
