Retail rose 1.2% and manufacturing 0.3%. But wholesale trade dropped 1.4%, and the public sector fell for the first time in six months. Third-quarter growth comes to about 0.3%. Reuters puts that near 1.3% annualized, while the Bank of Canada expected 2%.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Official data for September and the full third quarter come on 30 November. The advance estimate can still change. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On 30 October Statistics Canada released GDP by industry for August. Real GDP was essentially unchanged, for a second month in a row. 9 of 20 sectors grew. Analysts polled by Reuters expected a 0.2% rise.
What pulled it down. Services as a whole edged down 0.1%. Wholesale trade fell 1.4%, led by vehicle and parts wholesalers (minus 4.4%). The public sector (education, health care and public administration) fell 0.2%, its first drop in six months: federal public administration shrank 2.1% as 2026 Census work wound down. Oil and gas extraction fell 1.2%, a third monthly decline.
What held it up. Goods production edged up 0.1%. Retail rose 1.2% after a July dip, with more sales of cars, food and general merchandise. Manufacturing grew 0.3%, up for the fifth time in seven months. Rail transport rose 3.6%, the most since March 2025, helped by a record wheat crop.
What comes next. The agency's advance estimate shows GDP fell 0.1% in September on weaker manufacturing and mining. That puts third-quarter growth at about 0.3%. Reuters converts this to roughly 1.3% annualized, well below the Bank of Canada's 2% projection.
Why it matters to you. When an economy grows slower than its central bank expects, that can shape the next rate decisions and the Canadian dollar. That is our reading, not a forecast.
What we don't know. Whether the September drop holds up. How the Bank of Canada reads these numbers. How much US tariffs are weighing on growth.
