Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said on 30 October that the Fed needs at least two more rate hikes of 0.25 percentage point each. After that, she said, it should pause and look at the data.
Por qué te importa
This week the Fed kept its rate at 3.75-4%, and Logan voted for that. But core PCE inflation was 3.1% in the 12 months to September, against a 2% goal. Reuters calls it some of the most explicit rate guidance from a Fed official since Kevin Warsh took over as chair in May.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Watch whether other Fed officials and Warsh himself back this path. Rate hikes usually make loans more expensive. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On 30 October Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan spoke to students at Davidson College. She said that given the current outlook, the Fed needs at least two more rate hikes of 0.25 percentage point. After that, in her view, it should pause and assess the economy and markets.
What came before. The Fed raised rates by 0.25 point in September. This week it skipped a hike and kept the range at 3.75-4%. Logan voted for the pause. Reuters reports the vote was 10 to 2.
Why she wants higher. The Fed targets 2% inflation on the PCE index. Logan said the Fed has missed that goal for nearly six years. Core PCE inflation (without food and energy) was 3.1% in the 12 months to September. She said price pressure is broad, not just tariffs and the energy shock.
Why not all at once. Markets have been volatile on tech investment news and geopolitics. In that setting, Logan said, moving gradually helps people and businesses adjust. And if markets understand the Fed's plan, the exact timing of each step barely moves the long-term rates most borrowers pay.
Why it matters to you. If the Fed keeps hiking, dollar loans and mortgages can get more expensive, and the dollar and bonds will react. That is our reading, not a forecast: Logan is one of 12 voters, and the whole committee decides.
What we don't know. Whether other Fed officials agree. How Warsh views explicit rate guidance: Reuters says he thinks it belongs only in a crisis. Whether new inflation and energy data change the picture.
