Qué pasó

On 30 October Intel shares fell 29%, their worst day since the 1970s, per CNBC. The day before, the company reported Q3 revenue up 21% to $16.51 billion, as expected. But its Q4 forecast was weaker: $15 billion to $16 billion, against $17.07 billion expected. Other chip stocks fell too, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2.9%.

Por qué te importa

The PC market is weakening: memory and PCs are getting pricier, and demand is soft. PC chips bring in about half of Intel's revenue. A plant explosion in Israel costs about $600 million of revenue over two quarters. If you hold a Nasdaq fund, a day like this shows up in your account.

What happened. On 30 October Intel shares fell 29%. Per CNBC, that is their worst day since the 1970s. RTE, citing Reuters, says the company was on track to lose more than $137 billion of market value. Before the report the stock was up about 150% this year.

What the market disliked. Not the quarter itself, but the forecast. Intel's Q3 revenue rose 21% to $16.51 billion, in line with estimates. For Q4 it expects $15 billion to $16 billion, while analysts had averaged $17.07 billion, per LSEG. Adjusted earnings are guided at 25 cents a share, against 43 cents expected. Finance chief David Zinsner said the company does not expect positive cash flow this year.

Why PCs are weak. Suppliers are shifting capacity to high-bandwidth memory for AI. That makes ordinary memory pricier, PCs pricier, and demand was already soft. PC chips made up about half of Intel's Q3 revenue. In Q4 the company expects sales in that segment to fall by more than 20% from the previous quarter, after a 5% drop in the September quarter. Zinsner said the PC slowdown should last at least through the first half of next year.

The plant in Israel. The forecast also includes an explosion at Intel's plant in Israel this month: two workers died and a third was seriously hurt. Zinsner said it will cost the company about $600 million of revenue over two quarters. Intel chief Lip-Bu Tan called it a tragic accident. The plant has been shut for an extended period, which hits shipments of 10-nanometer chips.

The rest of the market. Nvidia fell 4%, Broadcom more than 5% and Qualcomm 11%. Per RTE, server makers Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Super Micro Computer fell 6% to 10%. Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Matt Britzman said the market is in a sell-first, ask-later mood and Intel's warning gave investors an easy reason to take profit. The Nasdaq Composite slid 2.9%. A day earlier Alphabet shares fell more than 12%, its worst day on record. CNBC says investors are nervous about the huge AI spending by the tech giants.

What is next for Intel. The core of Tan's plan is contract chip manufacturing, and Intel still has no outside customers for its new chips. Tan promised to announce a couple of customers in the next two quarters. Analysts at D.A. Davidson cut the stock from buy to neutral and wrote that it is hard to justify the current valuation when the weakness is this large.

Why it matters to you. One weak forecast can drag down a whole sector, even when the quarter itself was fine. We do not know how long it lasts. This is not a price forecast.
