SF Fed: El Niño could add up to 1 point to US inflation in 2027
A San Francisco Fed study says the current very strong El Niño could push US prices up by as much as 1 percentage point in 2027, a risk rather than a forecast.

Qué pasó
On November 2 the San Francisco Fed, one of the 12 Fed banks, published a letter on how El Niño affects the US economy. The authors estimate it already added about 0.3 points to prices from April to July 2026, and that fades by year end. But in 2027 prices could rise by up to 1 more point.
Por qué te importa
Inflation decides what happens to Fed rates, and so to loans, the dollar, stocks and crypto. Weather rarely makes it into forecasts, and here Fed researchers call it a risk outright.
Qué revisar y vigilar
Watch NOAA forecasts for El Niño and La Niña: the 2027 effect depends on whether La Niña follows. Also watch food and services prices. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. El Niño is a warming of Pacific waters that shifts weather around the world. The SF Fed letter says the current episode is "very strong" and NOAA's forecast is above every past case in their data. The authors studied how episodes since the 1950s affected US prices and jobs.
What they found. El Niño lifts prices for a while in its first summer, and that usually reverses by January. They estimate it added about 0.3 percentage point to the PCE price index from April to July 2026. In 2027 the effect could be about 1 point if La Niña follows. The rise comes mostly from services and food. Jobs grew in the second year of past episodes, with or without La Niña.
Why be careful. The authors say plainly this is not a forecast but a "meaningful risk". The data hold only 22 El Niño episodes, and only 4 very strong ones. The current one is stronger than all of them, and the model assumes the effect grows in line with strength. Without La Niña in 2027 the model sees no further price rise.
Why it matters to you. The Fed watches PCE inflation. If weather pushes prices up in 2027, the Fed has fewer reasons to cut rates. That moves bond yields, the dollar and risk assets. Food and services are the costs people notice first.
What is not known. Whether La Niña arrives in 2027. Whether a strong El Niño causes disasters the model does not cover. The authors' views are not necessarily the Fed leadership's. This is an overview, not advice.
