Qué pasó
On November 6 Elon Musk wrote on X that Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027. He says it makes room for more output of the Cybercab, a self-driving taxi. The pickup has sold far below plan for a long time: 20,237 in the US in 2025, while Musk expected 250,000 a year around the start of production.
Por qué te importa
If you hold Tesla shares or a fund that includes them, the news shows what the company is betting on: robotaxis and AI. The Cybertruck sold poorly, but the Cybercab is still a small program and will not soon replace the lost volume, Reuters says. What happens next to the share price is not in our sources, and we do not forecast it.

Watch whether Tesla gives more detail on timing, inventory and service for owners, how it answers the US regulator's questions on Cybercab certification, and how Cybercab output grows. This is an overview, not advice.

What was announced. On Friday, November 6, Elon Musk wrote on X: "Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production." Replying to a user, he called the Cybertruck the "best vehicle Tesla has ever made" and the wind-down the "end of an era." Reuters and Al Jazeera note it is unclear whether production will move to another site or end entirely. The Austin plant is the only known site that can make the truck's specialised parts. Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Why. Sales. According to Kelley Blue Book, Tesla sold 38,965 Cybertrucks in the US in 2024 and 20,237 in 2025, down 48%. Around the start of production in 2023, Musk had predicted annual sales of 250,000. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists 11 recalls since late 2023. Reuters says approval in Europe was impossible because of pedestrian impact rules. Electrek puts current sales at about 12% of plan, but that is the outlet's estimate: Tesla does not report Cybertruck deliveries separately. In August Tesla raised prices by $5,000, and the dual-motor version now starts at $74,990 (Electrek).
The Cybercab. It is a two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel, pedals or mirrors. In September Tesla began offering paid rides in a small fleet of Cybercabs in Austin. It lists installed capacity of more than 125,000 units. More than 1,200 Tesla robotaxis operate in Texas, and about 570 of them are Cybercabs (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles data). Reuters says the Cybercab is unlikely to make up for lost Cybertruck volumes soon. Also, in September the NHTSA opened an audit of the basis on which Tesla self-certified the Cybercab as meeting federal safety standards, and Tesla still has to answer the agency's questions.
A different reading. Electrek disputes the "make room" explanation: it says Giga Texas has more than 10 million square feet of factory floor and the Cybertruck line runs at about a quarter of its installed capacity. It sees weak demand as the main reason. That is Electrek's view, and Tesla has not given further detail.
What it means for holders. The post is about one model. The wider point is where Tesla puts its resources. None of the pages we opened gives a Tesla share move with a time, so we do not quote one. Investment decisions are yours.
