O que aconteceu

The RatingDog China manufacturing PMI, compiled by S&P Global, was 52.0 in October after 52.1 in September. A Reuters poll expected 51.6. Above 50 means growth. Output grew at the fastest pace since April, but export orders grew at the slowest pace in three months. The official October PMI fell to 49.3, a contraction.

Por que importa para você

The two surveys look at different firms. The official one covers more large and state-owned factories, RatingDog more private and smaller ones. Firms cut selling prices because of competition, and export prices fell for the first time since November 2025. So factories are busier but earn less per unit.

O que conferir e observar

Watch China's export data and producer prices. Business confidence fell to a nine-month low. This is an overview, not advice.

What happened. On November 2 the RatingDog purchasing managers' index (PMI) for Chinese manufacturing came out. S&P Global compiles it from a survey of purchasing managers. It was 52.0 in October, after 52.1 in September. A Reuters poll expected 51.6. The 50 mark separates growth from contraction, and Investing.com says the index has been above it for 11 months in a row.

What is inside. Reuters says output grew at the fastest pace in six months. The new orders index edged down to 53.3 from 53.4. Export orders grew at the slowest pace in three months: consumer and intermediate goods makers slowed, while investment goods makers sped up. Purchasing grew at the fastest pace since February. Employment rose for a second month, but only marginally.

Prices. Selling prices fell after rising in September. Firms blame intense competition, and slower input cost growth let them offer discounts. Export prices fell for the first time since November 2025. Confidence stayed positive but slipped to a nine-month low. Firms cite expensive inputs and competition.

Why the two PMIs differ. China's official statistics bureau PMI came out on October 31 and fell to 49.3 from 50.1, a contraction. Investing.com explains the gap by coverage: the official survey includes more large and state-owned firms, RatingDog more private and smaller ones. We covered the official PMI separately.

What it means. China's private sector is holding up for now, but exports are losing pace and prices are falling. For the world that means cheap Chinese goods, for China pressure on profits. On the same day China's central bank started daily overnight operations at 1.25%. On the yuan at a four-year high: https://freekonomist.com/en/news/yuan-four-year-high-pboc-fixing-2026-10/
