Joachim Nagel says the ECB will probably have to raise rates in December unless the inflation outlook improves a lot. It would be the third hike this year.

O que aconteceu
On November 3 Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel said in a speech in Berlin that an ECB rate hike in December is, from today's perspective, very likely necessary. Last week the ECB kept its deposit rate at 2.5%.
Por que importa para você
Nagel votes on the ECB Governing Council, so his view carries weight. Euro area inflation was 3.8% in September, nearly twice the 2% target. A hike would make euro loans and mortgages pricier and savings pay more.
O que conferir e observar
The next ECB meeting is in December, shortly before Christmas, with new forecasts running to 2029. Watch November euro area inflation. This is not a forecast or advice.

What Nagel said. In a speech at the Bundesbank's Berlin reception he explained why the ECB paused on October 29: so far there is little sign that expensive energy is pushing up wages. But he said there seems to be little alternative to a December hike unless the inflation outlook improves significantly.
Why inflation rose. Nagel blames mainly the conflicts in the Middle East, which pushed up energy prices. In September inflation was 3.8% in the euro area, 3.3% in Germany and 3.4% in France. Flash estimates for October: 2.8% in Germany and 3.8% in France.
The bad scenario is closer. Nagel said the ECB is approaching the adverse scenario from its September projections. Even the baseline already included one more hike. The ECB has raised rates twice this year.
He is not alone. Reuters reports that Bulgaria's central bank chief Dimitar Radev said something similar the same day. According to Reuters, investors expect two to three ECB hikes over the coming year, but a December move is not fully priced in.
What it means for you. If you have a floating rate loan in euros, it may get more expensive. Euro savings and bonds may pay more. Bond markets and the euro react to such signals in advance. This is an overview, not advice.
