O que aconteceu

Japan's Statistics Bureau said on 23 October that prices rose 2.1% in a year in September. Excluding fresh food also 2.1%, up from 1.7% in August. Excluding fresh food and energy 2.4%, up from 1.9%.

Por que importa para você

The Bank of Japan targets 2%. If prices stay above it, the bank raises rates, which usually lifts the yen. Through the yen and Japanese bonds, markets everywhere feel it, crypto included.

O que conferir e observar

The Bank of Japan meeting next week. Reuters says rates are likely to stay put, but the bank may raise its inflation forecast and hint at a hike. And the yen against the dollar.

According to Japan's Statistics Bureau, consumer prices in September were 2.1% higher than a year earlier. In August the rise was 1.9%.

The central bank watches prices excluding fresh food, known as core inflation. It rose from 1.7% to 2.1%. The last time it was above 2% was December 2025, then it stayed below the target for eight months. Prices excluding fresh food and energy, the stickiest part, rose 2.4% after 1.9% in August.

What got pricier. Food excluding fresh items rose 2.9% in a year. Hotels 4.6%, water 4.9%, household appliances 6.2%. What got cheaper. Energy as a whole fell 0.6%: electricity down 2.4%, petrol down 2.6%. The bureau says scrapping the provisional petrol tax and other government steps pulled energy down in the index. Rice other than the Koshihikari variety fell 21.1%.

The Bank of Japan raised its rate to 1.25% last month, a 31-year high, Reuters reports. According to the agency, the bank will likely hold at next week's meeting but may raise its inflation forecast. Governor Kazuo Ueda has already said inflation may overshoot the target because of the weak yen and demand from AI.

Why this matters beyond Japan. For years investors borrowed cheap yen and put it into other assets. When Japanese rates rise, some of that money goes home, and markets sometimes jolt. That happened in summer 2024. It does not mean it will happen now, but the yen is worth watching.
