O que aconteceu
On 21 October Japan's Ministry of Finance published September trade data. Exports rose 16.7% from a year earlier to 10.97 trillion yen. Imports rose 18.9% to 11.51 trillion. Result: a 536.6 billion yen deficit. Markets expected export growth of 20.1% and a deficit of only 181 billion.
Por que importa para você
Japan lives on selling cars and machines abroad and buying oil and gas. When imports grow faster than exports, the yen has a harder time getting stronger. Chips and chip-making tools are booming on AI demand, a good sign for Asian tech companies.
O que conferir e observar
Watch the Bank of Japan meeting later this month, where it publishes new growth and inflation forecasts. The government expects oil deliveries to return to last year's level in October, which could push the import bill back up.
What Japan sells. Ministry of Finance tables show exports of semiconductors and electronic components up 49.4% in September from a year earlier, and chip-making equipment up 43.9%. Cars rose 16.5%. Reuters links the gains to global investment in artificial intelligence and to companies passing higher costs on through prices.
Who buys. Exports to the US rose 22.9%, to China 8.6%. This is the 13th month of export growth in a row, but it slowed from 19.3% in August.
Where the deficit comes from. The fuel bill grew the most. Crude oil imports rose 51.1% by value, while Japan bought only 3.1% more by volume. LNG imports rose 39.2% by value. So Japan is paying more mostly because of prices, not quantity. Reuters says some tankers took a longer route around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in September and arrived late, so imports grew slower than in August (+28%).
The half-year picture. From April to September, the first half of Japan's fiscal year, exports rose 18.4%, imports 20.4%, and the deficit reached 2.82 trillion yen. That is almost double a year earlier (+98.8%). Reuters puts the dollar at 158.26 yen. All September figures are provisional and may be revised.
