Liquefied natural gas: Qatar extends supply halt for Edison, Pakistan buyers

Liquefied natural gas from Qatar will not reach Italy's Edison and some Pakistani buyers until the end of 2026, while the Dutch gas benchmark has climbed above 95 euros per MWh.

O que aconteceu

On 27 October Reuters reported that QatarEnergy extended force majeure on LNG deliveries to the end of December 2026, from an earlier deadline in early December. Italy's Edison said so in a message on the GME platform. Three more of its cargoes are affected. Buyers in Pakistan were also told.

Por que importa para você

Missing Qatari gas shows up in prices. The Dutch benchmark gas price is above 95 euros per MWh this week, close to its highest since December 2022. Reuters points to three causes: no Qatari supply, low storage in Europe and cooler weather.

O que conferir e observar

Whether force majeure runs past December, how European storage fills, and whether tankers from Qatar return to normal volumes. This is not advice to buy or sell.

What happened. On 27 October Reuters reported that Edison and some Pakistani clients of QatarEnergy will not receive LNG from the Gulf supplier until the end of the year. In a message on the platform of GME, Italy's energy markets manager, Edison said QatarEnergy had extended force majeure on deliveries to end-December. The previous deadline was early December. Three more cargoes intended for Edison are affected by the suspension. One person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that clients in Pakistan were also told the notices run to the end of the year. QatarEnergy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

What force majeure means. It is a contract clause: if a supplier cannot deliver because of events outside its control, it is not liable for the shortfall. Reuters says QatarEnergy has cancelled deliveries to Edison since April because of disruptions caused by the Iran war, which began in late February. We do not cover the conflict here. Our focus is the gas market.

Edison's contract. Edison holds a long-term contract with QatarEnergy for 6.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year for Italy. That is around 10% of the country's annual consumption. The contract has been in force since 2009 and runs for 25 years. Reuters calls Edison one of Qatar's biggest customers in Europe.

Prices and storage. Reuters links the price rise to three things: the lack of supply from Qatar, low gas storage in Europe and gradually cooler weather. The Dutch benchmark rose above 95 euros per megawatt hour this week, close to its highest since December 2022. OilPrice.com reported on 19 October that European storage was 74% full, against over 86% at this time last year and over the past five years.

Europe and Asia. OilPrice.com says that without Qatari gas, Asian LNG demand is declining amid high prices, while Europe is paying up for supply. LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain over 75% below prewar levels. One Qatari tanker, loaded in August, is heading to Poland through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, which is rare: ships usually go around Africa. OilPrice.com adds that QatarEnergy has extended force majeure every month since early March.

Keep in mind. Reuters relies on Edison's message and one person with knowledge of the matter. The article has no official confirmation from QatarEnergy. The sources do not say how much gas buyers in Pakistan will miss. This is not advice to buy or sell.
