O que aconteceu

Before Brazil's presidential runoff on 25 October, the dollar fell 0.90% on Friday to R$ 4.9930, below R$ 5. On Sunday evening, while votes were still being counted, the real's most active futures contract fell more than 9% in Chicago, Folha reported. That move followed a Datafolha projection, not an official result.

Por que importa para você

The real is a main gauge of how foreign investors feel about Brazil. It also sets the price of imports, travel and dollar debts, and it often leads emerging-market currencies. Brazilian stocks are up 15.3% since the candidacies were confirmed in August, so a lot of good news was already priced in.

O que conferir e observar

Watch the official count from the electoral court (TSE), the first full trading session, and how the extended voting hours play out in court. We do not name a winner here until the official result or two major outlets confirm it.

What happened. On Friday 23 October, the last session before the runoff, the spot dollar closed at R$ 4.9930, down 0.90%. It touched R$ 4.9878 at the low and R$ 5.0558 at the high. For the week it lost 1.57%, Valor Econômico reported. Traders said party tracking polls had cut the risk premium, which is the extra return investors ask for holding riskier assets.

Then came Sunday. Folha reported that at 20:20 Brasília time (23:20 UTC) the real's most active futures contract, expiring in November 2026, was down more than 9% on the Chicago exchange. Folha tied the move to a Datafolha projection of the runoff. A projection is a poll-based estimate. The count itself was still going: G1, citing the electoral court (TSE), put it at 84.73% of ballot boxes at 20:56.

Why we do not name a winner. The official result was not final in the pages we opened, and the vote was extended by order of an STF minister, Cristiano Zanin. Folha says investors and analysts see room for legal uncertainty whoever wins. So this is an explainer about the market, not a result story.

How the real got here. After the first round, on Monday 5 October, the dollar closed at R$ 5.0022, down 4.12%, and the Ibovespa, Brazil's main stock index, closed at 207,190.44 points, up 7.85%, Agência Brasil reported. The dollar was then down 8.87% in 2026. Folha adds that the Brazilian stock market is up 15.3% since the candidacies were confirmed in August.

What moves the real from here. Analysts quoted by Folha point to the public finances. If investors fear that spending will not be reined in, they ask for more return to lend to the government, interest rates rise, credit gets costlier for companies, profit outlooks weaken and stocks come under pressure. That chain tends to weaken the real. HSBC strategists told Valor that polls had become a statistical tie and that the number of undecided voters had grown, which raised uncertainty about the market reaction.

The court angle. Economist Leonardo Mendes told Folha that the extended voting does not mean an annulment or a long legal fight, but it puts that risk on investors' radar. If a challenge gains strength, he expects more demand for dollar protection, higher futures rates and more volatility in stocks. A result accepted quickly and openly could ease the tension, he added.

What it means abroad. For an emerging-market investor, Brazil is a big, liquid market, so its swings often show how the whole group of such markets is being valued. This is our reading, not a fact from the sources. We have no price outlook and no advice to buy or sell. For the latest inflation read, see our earlier story on Brazil's mid-month inflation.
