Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told the a16z podcast that AWS cloud capacity for 2026 is sold out. Most of 2027 is sold too, with only a small slice kept for on-demand use. A good chunk of 2028 is already committed. The demand comes from AI labs and large companies.

This week markets worried about how much big tech spends on AI. Jassy's words read like an answer: the money is not going into the void, customers have already booked the capacity. That is a demand signal for Amazon, Nvidia and chipmakers.

AWS is Amazon's cloud arm. Companies rent servers, storage and access to AI models from it instead of building their own data centres. Right now the main buyer of new capacity is AI: training models and running them every day.
Talking to a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz and general partner Erik Torenberg, Jassy said 2026 is sold out, 2027 is largely sold out and a good chunk of 2028 is gone too. Amazon always keeps a small reserve for on-demand use and for its EC2 (rented servers) and Bedrock (access to AI models) services.
Amazon said earlier this year it would spend about $220bn on capital projects in 2026: data centres, chips, power. Jassy said the company could invest a lot more and it would not be a bad use of capital. Even at this pace, he said, Amazon is leaving some demand on the table.
Jassy also said Amazon's own AI chip, Trainium, offers 30-40% better price performance than comparable processors. That is the company's own claim. In his view AI is still too expensive to be used everywhere, and cheaper inference will unlock demand from ordinary businesses.
The comments follow a rough week for tech: on 22 October the Nasdaq fell 2.6% as AI spending spooked investors. Jassy gave no dollar figure for the bookings, so the scale can only be checked against the 29 October results.
