Audi plans to build its first US factory at the Middle Georgia Megasite in the state of Georgia. The company names about $4 billion, around 4,500 jobs and capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles a year. It will make premium SUVs for North American buyers. Donald Trump announced the plan at a rally on 24 October.

Today Audi imports every car it sells in the US from Europe or Mexico. Reuters says Trump's tariffs cost the company €1.2 billion last year. Audi itself says local production will cut its exposure to trade and currency risks. For markets, it is another sign that tariffs push carmakers to build in the US.

The timeline. Audi says construction starts in 2027 and production in the early 2030s; Georgia's governor says full production in 2031. Until then Audi's import tariffs stay. Watch Volkswagen shares, since VW owns Audi, and whether the model list is confirmed. This is not advice.
What was announced. Audi, Volkswagen's premium brand, plans to open its first own production site in the United States. The Middle Georgia Megasite is in Peach County, near Perry and Macon. The company names an investment of about $4 billion, around 4,500 jobs and capacity of up to 200,000 vehicles a year. The plant will build premium SUVs designed for North American customers.
When. Here the sources differ a little. Audi's release says construction begins in 2027, with production in the early 2030s. Governor Brian Kemp's office is more specific: site grading in 2027, construction in 2028 and full production in 2031. Either way, the first cars from Georgia are several years away.
Why Audi is doing it. Audi chief Gernot Döllner says the company has much bigger ambitions in America and has not reached its potential there. The release says the plant will reduce exposure to trade and currency risks. North America becomes a third pillar of Audi's production next to Europe and China, while Germany and Europe stay the backbone, the company says.
Context from Reuters. Audi imports all its cars for the US market from Europe or Mexico, and tariffs cost it €1.2 billion last year. Audi sales have fallen two years in a row, down 7% in the first half of 2026, and its US sales are down 16% this year. A US official told Reuters the plant will build the Q7, Q8 and Q9. Audi's own release does not name models.
The politics. Trump made the announcement at a rally in Georgia ahead of the 3 November midterm elections. Tariff supporters say the plant happened because of them. Critics, Reuters notes, say tariffs have raised car prices and trade uncertainty has delayed some investments. We do not judge who is right.
