发生了什么

On 30 October in Beijing, Xi Jinping and Swiss President Guy Parmelin attended the signing of an upgraded free trade agreement. The first version dates from 2014. China will phase out tariffs on Swiss watches, machine tools and coffee. Over time more than 99% of trade between the two, by value, will be tariff-free.

为什么和你有关

It is a rare deal that lowers barriers while the US and the EU raise theirs. Swiss companies have already named where they want to invest in China: pharma, machinery, finance, watches and green energy.

要核实和关注什么

Watch for the date it takes effect: the sources give none, and tariffs will come down step by step. Also watch what Swiss exporters say about demand in China.

What happened. On 30 October Swiss President Guy Parmelin met Xi Jinping in Beijing. After the talks the two sides signed the upgraded free trade agreement, a linked agreement on labour and employment, and an agreement on research cooperation. The Swiss government says the new version will improve access to the Chinese market for Swiss goods and investment.

What is in the deal. According to China's Commerce Ministry, as reported by Investing.com, tariff-free goods will eventually make up more than 99% of the total value of trade between the two countries. China will gradually remove tariffs on several Swiss exports, including coffee, machine tools and watches. Switzerland will give better tariff terms to some Chinese goods: oilseeds, vegetable oils and pet food. For the first time a Chinese free trade agreement has a legally binding chapter on trade and sustainable development, with rules on environmental and labour protection.

Context. The 2014 deal was China's first free trade agreement with a European country. The upgrade was announced in August, a year after Donald Trump hit Switzerland with the highest US tariffs on any European exporter, Reuters reports. The agency says the deal bucks the wider shift towards protectionism by the US and the EU.

What comes next. Business leaders travelling with Parmelin named areas for new investment in China: pharmaceuticals, machinery, finance, watches and the green transition. Xi, according to state broadcaster CCTV, offered closer cooperation in digital industries, green energy storage and artificial intelligence. He also urged Switzerland to help strengthen China's trade ties with Europe.

Why it matters to you. For Swiss exporters such as watchmakers, machine makers and pharma, this is a clear gain in access to one of the world's biggest markets. For everyone else it is a signal: while some build tariff walls, others cut deals around them. This is a news summary, not advice to buy shares.

What we don't know. When the new version takes effect and how fast tariffs will fall. How much Swiss companies will actually invest in China. How the US and the EU will respond.
