Chipotle's Form 10-Q with the SEC, and whether the early-October slowdown fades. The CFO guided Q4 comparable sales growth of about 2%. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) published Q3 results for the quarter ended 30 September 2026 on 28 October, after the US market closed. Total revenue rose 9.6% to $3.3 billion, mostly from new restaurants. Comparable restaurant sales, which count restaurants open at least 13 full months, rose 2.1%. Average check was up 1.3% and transactions were up 0.8%. It was the third quarter in a row of positive transaction growth.
The mixed part. Profit did not follow sales. Net income was $339.9 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, against $382.1 million, or $0.29, a year earlier. Operating margin fell to 13.7% from 15.9%. Restaurant-level margin fell to 23.3% from 24.5%. Labor costs and general and administrative costs rose, and interest income fell. Food and packaging costs, by contrast, fell to 29.5% of revenue from 30.0%. CNBC notes that LSEG analysts expected adjusted EPS of $0.29 and revenue of $3.29 billion. Yahoo Finance adds that analysts expected comparable sales growth of 1.5%.
Who is spending. CEO Scott Boatwright said low-income customers outperformed the high-income group for the first time this year, with the greatest strength in September, when promotions were at their lowest. Digital sales were 38.8% of food and beverage revenue, up from 36.7%. The CFO said Chipotle raised prices by 2.7% in the quarter. CNBC also reports that sales softened in the second half of July over diner concerns about raw lettuce, although Chipotle's own supply was never tied to an outbreak.
What comes next. Management kept its 2026 outlook: comparable sales growth in the low single digits and 350 to 370 new restaurant openings. For 2027 it expects 340 to 360 new company-owned restaurants in the US and Canada, plus about 15 to 25 outside them. CNBC reports that trends softened in early October, as across the industry, but traffic has since returned to growth, and the CFO expects Q4 comparable sales growth of about 2%.
The stock. CNBC reported a 7% rise in extended trading on 28 October. Yahoo Finance shows CMG closing at $31.28 on 29 October, up 8.88% on the day, and still down about 20% for the year. Those are past moves, not a forecast.
What we don't know. Whether the traffic recovery in November and December holds. How much of the margin pressure is temporary. What the full 10-Q shows.
