The chain has more than 21,000 stores. The FTC says its customers are often on low or fixed incomes and rely on its prices. Reuters reports DG stock fell more than 4% on Monday afternoon. All of this is allegation, not a court finding.

What happened. On Monday 26 October 2026 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), joined by 20 states, filed a complaint against Dollar General Corporation in the US District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. The FTC says the company routinely charged customers more at the register than the prices shown on shelves, price tags and advertisements. The states that joined are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.
What the complaint alleges. In the FTC's summary, thousands of stores overcharged shoppers and took in millions of dollars in unlawful overcharges, with too few safeguards to stop it. The complaint says Dollar General received tens of thousands of complaints from customers who say it did not honor the advertised price. Mississippi Today, citing the lawsuit, puts the number at almost 30,000. Reuters reports that the complaint also cites failed state inspections and undercover shopping by the FTC. According to the complaint, the company has paid $6 million in settlements with six states since 2019 over inaccurate pricing. The FTC and the states say these practices break the FTC Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and state laws.
One example from the suit. Mississippi Today reports that the lawsuit includes a complaint from a Mississippi customer. She said dog food listed at $24.95 on the company's website cost her $29 at the store.
What Dollar General says. The company denies the claims and says it will defend the case vigorously. Its goal is 100% accuracy between shelf and register prices in every store. It says that, as at other retailers, occasional discrepancies can occur, and that store teams are then expected to make things right for the customer. It also says it learned of the FTC investigation in early February, and that FTC staff demanded an amount it says is unrelated to any realistic estimate of overcharges and orders of magnitude larger.
What the suit asks for. The suit seeks a permanent injunction plus monetary and other relief, CBS News reports. The Commission voted 2-0 to file. The FTC says it files when it has "reason to believe" the law is being broken, and that the court will decide the case.
The market. Reuters reports that Dollar General stock (DG) was down more than 4% on Monday afternoon. That is a one-day move, not a verdict on the case.
What to do. The FTC says you can report fraud and bad business practices at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. And comparing your receipt with the shelf price is a good habit in any store.
