Spot gold fell below $4,000 an ounce on 30 October. Kitco had it near $3,958.80 in early US trading, down 1.32%. A day earlier the US reported September PCE inflation: prices rose 0.5% on the month and 3.6% on the year. Without food and energy it was 3.1%.

High inflation makes another Fed rate hike more likely, and gold pays no interest. Futures priced a December hike at 75% to 83%, depending on the source. For jewellery buyers in India, the Gulf and Turkey, the world price is only one input, along with the exchange rate and taxes. That is our reading.

要核实和关注什么

Watch the Fed's December decision, October PCE on 25 November and the World Gold Council's demand report in early November. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.

What happened. Spot gold dropped below $4,000 an ounce on Friday 30 October. Kitco had it near $3,958.80 in early US trading, down 1.32%. Gold was heading for a second monthly decline in a row. Yahoo Finance put the October loss at more than 3%.

The data. On Thursday the US Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) published September figures. The PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose 0.5% on the month and 3.6% on the year. Excluding food and energy it rose 0.3% and 3.1%. Yahoo notes the monthly jump was the biggest since March. Real disposable income, which adjusts for prices, fell 0.3%.

Why gold cares. Gold pays no interest. When rates rise or look set to rise, bonds and savings accounts look better and gold loses appeal. The Fed held its rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday, but the vote was 10 to 2: two members wanted an immediate hike of 0.25 percentage points. The US economy also grew fast, at a 3.4% annualized pace in the third quarter. After Thursday's data, futures gave a December hike about an 83% chance, Kitco says. Reuters, as quoted by FXLeaders, put it near 75%.

A twist. The 10-year Treasury yield fell about 7 basis points on Thursday to roughly 4.98%. That normally helps gold. It still fell. Kitco points to rate expectations and broad selling of precious metals. Yahoo adds a tech-stock selloff and doubts about returns on AI spending. Higher oil prices also added to inflation worries, Kitco says.

What about buyers. Yahoo reports that Chinese households and longer-term investors bought when prices neared $4,000, which limited the drop. For jewellery shoppers in India, the Gulf and Turkey, the dollar price is only one input. Local prices also depend on the exchange rate, taxes and the jeweller's margin, so they can move differently. That is our reading. Check your local rate before you buy.

What to watch. The odds of a December hike. The October PCE report on 25 November. The World Gold Council's quarterly demand report, due in early November.

What we don't know. Whether gold stays below $4,000 after Friday's close. Whether the Fed hikes in December. How long household buying holds up.
