The European Central Bank said on 29 October that Christine Lagarde will step down as president on 7 February 2027. She told the ECB Governing Council and European Council President António Costa herself. Her eight-year term was due to end in October 2027. The European Council will appoint her successor.

The ECB sets the price of money in euros: loan and deposit rates and, through them, the euro's exchange rate. A change at the top starts a race for the job, and markets will try to guess whether the next president is tougher or softer on inflation. That can move the euro and euro area bonds.

Watch who gets nominated: the press most often names Pablo Hernández de Cos and Klaas Knot. The ECB also announces its rate decision today. This is an overview, not trading advice.
What happened. On 29 October the ECB published a short statement: President Christine Lagarde told the Governing Council and European Council President António Costa that she will step down on 7 February 2027. The Council thanked her with a long standing ovation. Lagarde has led the ECB since July 2019, and her term was due to end in October 2027. So she leaves nearly nine months early.
How the successor is picked. Under the EU treaty, the ECB president is appointed by the European Council, meaning the leaders of EU countries. Before that, the European Parliament and euro area countries are consulted. CNBC notes that these appointments usually involve political bargaining between countries.
Who is named. According to CNBC, the leading candidates are Spain's Pablo Hernández de Cos, now head of the Bank for International Settlements, and the Netherlands' Klaas Knot, former head of the Dutch central bank. Knot is seen as tougher on inflation. Analysts quoted by CNBC say his appointment could be read as supportive for the euro, while de Cos would mean more continuity. ECB chief economist Philip Lane and board member Isabel Schnabel are also due to leave next year.
Why now. The ECB gave no official reason. CNBC points to the backdrop: debt stress in France and a French presidential election next year. A source cited by Reuters links the early exit to Lagarde wanting more freedom to speak on politics. That is unconfirmed, and CNBC says it has not verified it either.
What comes next. The ECB rate decision and Lagarde's press conference are due on 29 October. This is an overview, not advice to buy or sell the euro.
