On November 4 OpenAI said it will acquire Pierre Computer Company. Pierre makes Code Storage, a Git-based code hosting service, and the open-source Trees and Diffs libraries already used in the Codex app. Terms were not disclosed, and closing needs regulatory approval.
为什么和你有关
If you write code with AI agents, OpenAI wants the whole path from first branch to deploy to run through Codex. Axios sees it as a challenge to Microsoft's GitHub, even though Microsoft owns nearly a quarter of OpenAI.

Watch when the deal closes and which Code Storage features show up in Codex. If you use Code Storage, OpenAI says the service keeps running. This is not investment advice.

What was announced. On November 4 OpenAI said on its blog that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company. Pierre makes Code Storage, a service that lets apps store code and its history with Git, plus a set of open-source developer tools. Its Trees (file navigation) and Diffs (showing changes) libraries already run in the Codex app.
Why OpenAI wants it. The company says the systems around Git have to change as more work happens in parallel through agents. Two days before the deal OpenAI described Pando, its in-house source control system for engineers and agents. Axios reports that Pando cut the time to push code changes by nearly 80%, and OpenAI is exploring how to offer it to customers. OpenAI says the goal is to make Codex the place where developers and agents take on their most ambitious projects.
Why people mention GitHub. Axios writes that OpenAI is joining companies challenging Microsoft's GitHub as AI agents write more code. Critics say GitHub was built for humans. Cursor, now owned by SpaceX, launched a rival called Origin in August, and former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced a competing product last month. Microsoft owns nearly a quarter of OpenAI.
What happens to Pierre's products. Open-source projects stay open source, and OpenAI says it will keep contributing. Customers can keep using Code Storage after closing while its features move into Codex.
What we don't know. The price. When regulators approve the deal and it closes. Whether Code Storage stays a separate product or fully merges into Codex.
