Yonhap and Kyunghyang link the drop to worries that a Democratic-led US Congress could tighten rules on AI data centers. That is the outlets' and analysts' reading. Chip stocks led the fall, and foreign investors were net sellers.

What happened. South Korean stocks fell sharply on Thursday, November 5. The KOSPI closed down 300 points, or 5.28%, at 5,383.80. Kyunghyang says the KOSDAQ closed down 5.11% at 678.41. Both Yonhap and Kyunghyang say big chip stocks led the fall.
Samsung Electronics share price. Samsung Electronics closed down 7.57% at 201,500 won. Kyunghyang adds that it fell as low as 199,800 won during the day, under the 200,000 won line. SK hynix lost 9.46% and closed at 1.26 million won.
What is a sidecar? It is a short pause in program selling. It does not close the market. Yonhap says the Korea Exchange suspended program trading in KOSPI shares for five minutes at 10:16 a.m. MBC says a sell-side sidecar followed on the KOSDAQ at 2:27 p.m., also for five minutes. Kyunghyang says it was the first time both markets triggered one together since October 15.
Who sold. By Yonhap's count, foreign investors sold a net 3.39 trillion won of KOSPI shares, while individuals bought a net 2.28 trillion won and institutions 841.8 billion won. Kyunghyang puts the foreign figure at 3.42 trillion won and says it was the fifth straight session of foreign selling.
Why, according to the sources. Yonhap says the Democratic Party's landslide in the US midterm elections raised concerns that the new Congress, which takes control in January, could tighten regulations on AI data centers and affect investment in the sector. Kim Seok-hwan of Mirae Asset Securities told Yonhap that the "blue wave" dragged down chip value chains and stoked foreign selling. Kyunghyang quotes Lee Kyung-min of Daishin Securities, who says worries about stricter data center rules outweighed relief that the election was over. These are explanations from the outlets and analysts.
What analysts expect. Kyunghyang says brokerages see more volatility, mostly in chip stocks, but not a long correction. Yang Il-woo of Samsung Securities said the effect is likely to be short term. These are forecasts, and we do not vouch for them.
What it means for you. If you follow Samsung or Korean markets, one day does not make a trend. That is our view.
What we do not know. Whether foreign selling continues. How the market opens next. Whether the data center worries prove justified.
