Tom Lee of Fundstrat says big investors are not buying the Nasdaq dip because they are waiting for the US midterm elections on November 3. This is his opinion, not a fact.

发生了什么

Fundstrat strategist Tom Lee said on CNBC that Friday's Nasdaq sell-off looked different from earlier ones and resembled forced selling. The Nasdaq 100 fell 3.5% on Friday and 6.65% in October, Stocktwits reports.

为什么和你有关

In Lee's view, big investors do not want to buy the drop before the US midterm elections on November 3: "People are marking their calendar until November 3rd." If he is right, the caution could fade after the vote. It is only his reading.

要核实和关注什么

Watch how the market behaves after November 3. Lee's "forced seller" idea has no evidence behind it: no names or data have been published. This is an overview, not advice.

What Lee said. Tom Lee, managing partner at research firm Fundstrat, spoke on CNBC after a sharp fall in tech stocks. In his view, Friday's sell-off looked different from earlier ones: "Today looks like someone's getting liquidated," meaning someone being forced out of positions. He did not think the market was running away from stocks. He pointed out that the equal-weight S&P 500 was rising while he spoke, and read that as a sign money was staying in stocks, Yahoo Finance reports.

Why buyers wait. Lee says institutional investors "just don't have conviction until after midterm." He added that election uncertainty may also keep some retail investors on the sidelines. In his telling, they still plan to buy the dip but are waiting for the vote to pass. The US midterm elections are on November 3. Yahoo Finance reports that markets expect Democrats to gain ground in both chambers of Congress.

What was happening in the market. According to Yahoo Finance, Intel shares fell 28.6% after a weak fourth-quarter forecast, the company's worst day since 1974. Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion amid AI spending. The 10-year US Treasury yield closed Friday at 4.93%. A week earlier Lee had said that yields below 5% meant the AI sell-off was ending. Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers offered another view: his retail clients had not fled, and bought Alphabet on Thursday.

The "one investor" theory. Lee suggested one large investor may have been forced to sell tech shares, possibly because of borrowed money and a margin call. He also said: "I don't know if it's an institution." No evidence has been published, no one has been named, and we name no one. It is a guess.

Limits. This is one strategist's opinion, not a Freekonomist forecast. We could not find a publication date on the Stocktwits page on TradingView, so we rely on the CNBC appearance as both sources describe it. The sources use different indexes: the Nasdaq 100 at Stocktwits and the Nasdaq Composite at Yahoo Finance, so their percentages should not be mixed.
