O que aconteceu
Eurostat gave its flash estimate on 30 October: euro area GDP grew 0.4% in Q3 2026 from the previous quarter. Q2 was 0.6%. On the year, growth was 1.3%. The market, per Trading Economics, expected 0.2%.
Por que importa para você
Growth is uneven. Ireland grew 5.5%, Spain and the Netherlands 0.6% each. Germany grew just 0.2%, Italy stood still, France and Lithuania shrank. For the euro and the ECB the big picture matters: the economy is holding up for now.
O que conferir e observar
The second GDP estimate on 13 November and euro area inflation for October. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On 30 October Eurostat published its preliminary flash estimate of GDP for Q3 2026. The euro area economy grew 0.4% from the previous quarter, the whole EU 0.5%. In Q2 growth was 0.6% and 0.7%.
On the year. Compared with Q3 2025, euro area GDP rose 1.3% and EU GDP 1.5%. Annual growth was positive in 14 of the countries that have reported and negative in one.
Expectations. Per Trading Economics, the market expected 0.2% growth. The result was double that.
Who pulls and who drags. Ireland grew fastest: 5.5% on the quarter. But Eurostat marks its figures as experimental, and they often swing a lot. Next come Estonia, Spain and the Netherlands at 0.6% each. Germany grew 0.2%, Italy 0.0%. Lithuania fell 1.0% and France 0.1%.
Why it matters to you. When the economy grows faster than expected, the ECB has less reason to fear that a rate hike would hurt growth. That can move the euro and European bonds. That is our reading, not a forecast.
Limits. This is an early estimate based on 19 countries that make up 96% of euro area GDP. The numbers can change: the next estimate comes on 13 November.
What we don't know. How much the figure changes in the second estimate. How much of the growth came from Ireland alone. What October inflation will show.
