O que aconteceu
On 30 October Exxon reported Q3 2026 earnings of $15.4 billion and Chevron $9.9 billion. Both point to higher margins on refined products. Exxon's refining arm (Energy Products) earned $9.1 billion on an adjusted basis, its drilling arm $7.3 billion. Chevron's downstream earned $4.9 billion, against $1.1 billion a year earlier.
Por que importa para você
Per Reuters, the US-Israeli war with Iran and the Russia-Ukraine war cut fuel-making capacity, and gasoline and diesel got more expensive. Refiners that kept running earned more. Diesel powers trucks and ships, so its price reaches the cost of many goods.

What happened. On 30 October ExxonMobil reported Q3 2026 earnings of $15.4 billion, or $3.72 a share. Adjusted earnings, which strip out one-off items and timing effects, were $17.5 billion. Chevron reported $9.9 billion, or $5.06 a share, and $10.4 billion adjusted. Per Reuters, both beat analyst estimates.
Where the money came from. Exxon's Energy Products unit, which includes its refineries, earned $9.1 billion on an adjusted basis. Oil and gas production earned $7.3 billion. Reuters says this is the first time in at least six years that Exxon earns more from refining than from drilling. Chevron's downstream unit earned $4.9 billion, against $1.1 billion in Q3 2025.
What a margin is. A refining margin is the gap between what a refinery pays for crude oil and what it gets for fuels like diesel and gasoline. When fuel gets more expensive faster than crude, the gap grows. Chevron ties its higher earnings mainly to higher margins on refined product sales. Exxon says the same about Energy Products.
Why diesel. Reuters writes that the US-Israeli war with Iran and the Russia-Ukraine war have disrupted energy markets for months and pushed gasoline and diesel prices higher. The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on refineries in Saudi Arabia and Russia, it adds, knocked out fuel-making capacity. Refiners with plants still running gained. Exxon says that so far this year it has its highest global diesel yield and its highest North American diesel volumes in its data, which starts in 2014. Chevron's US refineries set a record for crude throughput at 1.09 million barrels a day, and Reuters says its diesel and jet fuel yields rose by more than 10%.
Why it matters to you. Diesel powers trucks, ships and farm machines, so its price feeds into the cost of many goods. High refining margins show that fuel is selling at a bigger premium to crude oil. That is our reading, not a forecast. There is also a limit: neither company says how much of its profit came from diesel alone.
Limits. Margins swing fast. Chevron's chief financial officer told Reuters that Brent crude moved between $68 and $132 a barrel during Q3. Chevron's own average for Brent was $97, against $69 a year earlier.
What we don't know. How long refining margins stay this high. How much of the profit came from diesel alone. How much of the lost fuel-making capacity comes back, and when.
