O que aconteceu

On 29 October twelve EU countries, including Belgium and Germany, said they will put 42.6 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves on the market by the end of January 2027. Of that, 20.5 million barrels is diesel. The countries point to a commitment made within the G7.

Por que importa para você

After the Middle East supply disruption, energy got more expensive, and diesel costs over 2.30 euros a litre in several EU countries. The release aims to ease pump prices, but no source promises they will fall. The EU energy commissioner expects no supply problem, but said that might not matter to people struggling with bills.

O que conferir e observar

Not clear whether these are new barrels or part of the IEA's March programme of 400 million: the 29 October articles do not say. Watch the releases through January and the diesel price at your station.

What happened. On 29 October twelve EU countries said they will put 42.6 million barrels of oil from their strategic reserves on the market by the end of January 2027. Of that, 20.5 million barrels is diesel. The twelve are Germany, France, Greece, Denmark, Belgium, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal, Latvia, Sweden, the Netherlands and Italy. EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen spoke after a meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg. He said the EU is stabilising the diesel market as well as it can before winter.

Why release stocks. Strategic reserves are oil that governments hold back for a supply shock. The reason here is the Middle East supply disruption. Since then energy has become more expensive, and diesel costs more than 2.30 euros a litre at the pump in several EU countries. In early October the G7 countries decided to draw up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from stocks over four months.

What it means for prices. The honest answer is that no source gives a price forecast. The stated aim is to ease pressure at the pump. Jorgensen said the EU does not expect a supply security problem as such, but for people struggling to pay their bills that might not matter. In March the IEA wrote that the most important factor for stable flows is the resumption of regular shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Euronews reported that on 8 October IEA chief Fatih Birol said Middle Eastern crude flows were recovering significantly, while refined products such as diesel and jet fuel remained severely constrained. Brent crude traded at $105 that day. The focus on diesel in the new release looks logical, but that is our reading.

New barrels or old ones. Here the sources differ or stay silent. The 29 October articles tie the release to the G7 commitment and do not say whether it counts within the IEA's March programme. That programme, agreed on 11 March, covers 400 million barrels, and in Europe the contributions mostly take the form of refined products. Reuters wrote on 7 October that about 100 million barrels of the March pledges had yet to reach the market, and a European Commission spokesperson said planned releases must stay within the amount approved in March. A document seen by Euronews said 326 million of the 400 million barrels had been released and that the G7's 100 million could be covered within the existing action. We found no source that directly places the 42.6 million barrels inside the March programme or outside it.

What to watch. Euronews reported on 8 October that delivery depends on national decisions about how strategic stocks are counted and released. How much of the announced 42.6 million barrels reaches the market, and when, will show in the coming months.
