O que aconteceu
The Bank of England's sterling index, a trade-weighted measure against a basket of 18 currencies, reached 86.4 this week. The BBC says that is the joint highest level since the June 2016 Brexit referendum. The Bank will confirm the figure on Thursday.
Por que importa para você
This is not a record against the dollar or the euro. Reuters has sterling at $1.3495, its highest since September 15, a seven-week high. A stronger pound makes imports and foreign holidays cheaper for UK buyers.
O que conferir e observar
Watch the Bank of England rate decision on Thursday: a first rise in three years is widely expected. Some analysts say the market has already priced it in. This is an overview, not financial advice.

What happened. The Bank of England's sterling index reached 86.4 this week, according to the BBC. That is the joint highest level since the June 2016 Brexit referendum. The index is the most-watched measure of the pound against a basket of 18 of the world's main currencies. The Bank will officially confirm the calculation on Thursday.
Against which currency? Against none in particular. The Bank describes its sterling index as a trade-weighted measure: bilateral exchange rates are weighted by trade flows, and the January 2005 average equals 100. In the Bank's narrow version, which uses 2024 trade data, the euro area carries 40.2% and the United States 22.0%. The BBC does not say whether it used the narrow or the broad version. So "post-Brexit high" is true for this basket. It is not a claim about the dollar or the euro alone.
Dollar and euro. Reuters reported sterling at $1.3495 on Wednesday, its highest since September 15, helped by a weaker US dollar after the Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. That is a seven-week high against the dollar, not a ten-year one. The BBC put the pound at $1.3495 and €1.1979 as of 04:15 GMT on Thursday.
Why now. The BBC says some traders see the UK in a different light given relative political stability, solid growth and the rapprochement with the European Union. Jim O'Neill, an economist and former Treasury minister, said: "People were, and to a lesser extent, are, underestimating the improving momentum in the UK." Markets also expect the Bank of England to raise interest rates on Thursday, the first rise in three years. Higher rates typically boost a currency.
Limits. Reuters quotes Goldman Sachs analysts, who say that pricing of Bank of England hikes looks stretched relative to other G10 currencies and that valuation is a challenge for sterling. Some economists polled by Reuters expect the Bank to temper market bets on three to four increases in 2027. The BBC adds that UK growth has beaten all forecasts this year, but higher energy and fuel prices have hit consumer confidence.
What it means for you. The BBC says a stronger pound can help rein in inflation and increases buying power for consumers on imports and on holidays. If you hold money in another currency, look at your own pair, because the index can rise while one pair does not. That last point is our view.
What we do not know. The final figure the Bank confirms. What the Bank decides on Thursday. Whether the rate rise is already in the price.
