O que aconteceu
On 27 October VanEck launched the VanEck Wealth Builder ETF (ticker WBMO) on the NYSE. It is an actively managed fund that builds a portfolio out of other ETFs: US and global stocks, bonds, gold and other real assets, plus bitcoin. The bitcoin target is 2%, within a range of 1 to 5%. The net fee is 0.26% a year.
Por que importa para você
Bitcoin is quietly moving into plain buy-and-hold portfolios. This strategy used to be available only to financial advisors as a model portfolio. Now anyone can buy it as one ticker at a broker. The fund does not hold bitcoin directly. It gets exposure through exchange-traded products.
O que conferir e observar
How much money the fund gathers in its first weeks. Whether other big managers add bitcoin to their all-in-one funds. This is not advice to buy or sell.
What happened. On 27 October VanEck launched the Wealth Builder ETF, ticker WBMO, on the New York Stock Exchange. It is an all-in-one fund: instead of single stocks it holds a set of other ETFs, from VanEck and from other managers. VanEck's team decides what to own, how much and when to rebalance. The company says it rebalances generally once a quarter.
What is inside. US and international stocks, bonds, real assets and bitcoin. Real assets (gold, natural resources, infrastructure) have a 7.5% target within a 4 to 12% range. Bitcoin has a 2% target within a 1 to 5% range. The fund does not buy bitcoin directly. It puts part of its money into digital asset exchange-traded products. VanEck warns that these are highly volatile and some of them lack the protections of regular registered funds.
What it costs. The gross fee is 0.33% a year: 0.15% for management and 0.18% for the funds inside. After the manager's waiver the net fee is 0.26%. VanEck's site puts the gross rate at about 33 dollars a year for every 10,000 dollars invested.
Why it stands out. The classic 60/40 portfolio (60% stocks, 40% bonds) holds no gold and no bitcoin. VanEck pitches WBMO as an alternative. Portfolio manager David Schassler says in the release that the 60/40 portfolio was built for a different investment landscape. VanEck managed about 244.1 billion dollars at the end of September.
Keep in mind. The fund is new and has no track record. 2% in bitcoin is a small slice, but the fund as a whole can fall hard with the market. This is not advice to buy or sell.
