Whether Beijing answers with more support, the private PMI next week and October export data. This is an overview, not a forecast or financial advice.
What happened. On Saturday, 31 October, China's National Bureau of Statistics published its October purchasing managers' indexes (PMI). A PMI is a survey of purchasing managers: are orders, output and hiring better or worse than a month ago. Above 50 means growth, below 50 means shrinking. The manufacturing index fell to 49.3 from 50.1 in September. Per the bureau's table, it was lower only in July this year: 49.2.
Expectations. A Reuters poll of 23 economists expected 50.0, a Bloomberg survey 49.9. The result missed both.
What's inside. The output index fell 1.9 points to 49.8 and new orders 1.1 points to 49.4. New export orders dropped to 48.7 from 50.0. Large firms stayed above 50 (50.2), while medium (48.4) and small (47.5) firms were below. The high-tech manufacturing PMI was 51.3, per Bloomberg, so that part is still growing.
Prices. Factories' raw material price index fell to 56.8 from 60.8 and the output price index to 51.7 from 54.0. Both are above 50, so prices are still rising, just slower than in September.
Building and services. The non-manufacturing index was 49.7 after 50.2. Construction fell to 48.0, and new orders in construction to 40.0. Services sat right at 50.0. The composite output index was 49.7, down 1.0 point.
Why it matters to you. Weak demand in China usually weighs on commodity prices and on the currencies of countries that sell to it, such as Australia. That is our reading, not a forecast. Bloomberg says the data adds pressure on Beijing to support growth, with a target of 4.5-5% for the year.
What we don't know. Whether this is a one-off dip or the start of a slowdown. Whether new support measures come. What exports and the private October PMI show.
