Democrats take the House too, and gold jumps back above $4,000

What happened. NBC News projected that Democrats will have full control of Congress. The Associated Press called the House for them. Going in, they needed a net gain of three seats. NBC says it could be their largest majority in nearly two decades. There is no final seat count yet because some districts are still counting.

What comes next in Congress. The new 120th Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2027. Then Democrats get the power to issue subpoenas and schedule committee hearings. Hakeem Jeffries of New York is likely to become speaker. He needs 218 votes (NBC, Al Jazeera).

Gold and metals. Per Reuters, spot gold rose 2.4% to $4,021.68 an ounce by 07:18 GMT. US gold futures for December gained 2.3% to $4,031.20. Silver rose 4% to $51.74, platinum 2.5% and palladium 4.2%. The dollar fell to a one-month low. A cheaper dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies.

Why. These are analysts' views, not facts. Kyle Rodda of Capital.com expects gridlock between the White House and Congress, which could slow US spending. He says gold gained because yields and the dollar dropped. Chris Weston of Pepperstone thinks investors want protection from a more unpredictable Trump administration.
