Democrats take the House too, and gold jumps back above $4,000

After the Senate, Democrats also won the House, giving them all of Congress. Gold rose 2.4% to $4,021 and the dollar fell to a one-month low.

What changed (November 4, 2026 at 10:40 AM UTC): Added an explainer on whether Trump faces impeachment, a reader poll and a detailed market reaction with charts.

What happened

NBC News and the Associated Press say Democrats won a majority in the House of Representatives. They took the Senate earlier in the night, so they now hold all of Congress. Markets bought gold: spot rose 2.4% to $4,021.68 an ounce by 07:18 GMT. Silver gained 4% to $51.74. The dollar hit a one-month low (Reuters).

Why it matters to you

If you hold gold, dollars or US stocks, this affects you. Analysts quoted by Reuters expect gridlock between the White House and Congress. That could slow government spending. Yields and the dollar are falling, and gold usually gains when that happens.

What to check and watch

Watch the US market open on November 4 and the jobs report on Friday. The new Congress meets on January 3, 2027. This is an overview, not a forecast or advice.

The big question

Does this mean Trump gets impeached?

Short answer: No, not automatically. The House can impeach Trump with a simple majority. But only the Senate can remove a president, and that takes two thirds: 67 of 100 senators. Democrats do not have those votes.

  1. 1House

Votes on the charges (that vote is the impeachment). A simple majority is enough. The new Democratic House starts on January 3, 2027; until then Republicans run the House.[4][2]

  2. 2Senate

Holds the trial. Conviction needs two thirds of senators present, usually 67 of 100.[5]

  3. 3Outcome

If the Senate convicts, the president loses office and the vice president takes over. If not, the president stays and the impeachment is just a mark in history.[5]

Democrats ≈53–54Republicans ≈46–47Republicans whose votes would be needed: 13–1467 votes to remove a president
  • Trump has been impeached twice already: in December 2019 and January 2021. The Senate acquitted him both times. On February 13, 2021 the vote was 57 guilty to 43 not guilty, 10 short. Seven Republicans voted to convict.[6]
  • The math now: before the vote the Senate had 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats. CBS counts 6 seats flipped to Democrats, NBC reports 7. That puts Democrats at about 53–54 seats. To reach 67 they would need 13–14 Republican votes. The final seat count is not in yet.[8][1]
  • Hakeem Jeffries, the likely House majority leader, says: "We haven't ruled anything in, and we haven't ruled anything out." Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said two days before the vote that he backs impeaching Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth: "we have to try, even if it doesn't succeed."[7]
  • Republican Steve Scalise predicted Democrats would try impeachment on "Day 1". That is a politician's forecast, not a Democratic plan.[9]

Known for sure: the rules in the Constitution and the January 3, 2027 start date. Unknown: whether Democrats will hold an impeachment vote at all. This is an overview, not a forecast.

Where it’s happening

What happened. NBC News projected that Democrats will have full control of Congress. The Associated Press called the House for them. Going in, they needed a net gain of three seats. NBC says it could be their largest majority in nearly two decades. There is no final seat count yet because some districts are still counting.

What comes next in Congress. The new 120th Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2027. Then Democrats get the power to issue subpoenas and schedule committee hearings. Hakeem Jeffries of New York is likely to become speaker. He needs 218 votes (NBC, Al Jazeera).

Gold and metals. Per Reuters, spot gold rose 2.4% to $4,021.68 an ounce by 07:18 GMT. US gold futures for December gained 2.3% to $4,031.20. Silver rose 4% to $51.74, platinum 2.5% and palladium 4.2%. The dollar fell to a one-month low. A cheaper dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies.

Why. These are analysts' views, not facts. Kyle Rodda of Capital.com expects gridlock between the White House and Congress, which could slow US spending. He says gold gained because yields and the dollar dropped. Chris Weston of Pepperstone thinks investors want protection from a more unpredictable Trump administration.

Who this affects. People who hold gold, silver, dollars or US stocks. A sharp jump in one session does not mean it will continue.

What we do not know. The exact size of the Democratic majority. Whether gold holds above $4,000 after the US open and Friday's jobs report. This is an overview, not a forecast or advice.
